That;s the one mate! Next time if you go again, try to talk to a man with a moustach, he's the owner. If he knows you he will do the wok for you! Personally his sambal kangkong, fried kampong chicken, curry crabs, sambal mussels, fried rice, fried hokkein mee is a MUST TRY there. Afraid to say i agree the rest are very normal.

Which one did you go to? I specifically love the one at the corner which was owned by a teochew ah hia. His curry crabs are pretty kickass. Other than that, others like steam fish or steam crabs or steam lobsters are i should say nothing fantastic and no different from any you can from Singapore. But try those sambal / curry dishes, they are normally better than what you can find in Singapore.

Also on the way back, i will normally drop by Taman Garden where you can have your second round of BBQ seafood and they are also quite good and cheap too. Otherwise you can try other varieties like zhi char or roast meat etc, they are all good and cheap. Every of those things makes it a worthy trip.

One very important thing is to know people. If you know them, they would give you the good seafood, the good durian etc etc. The restaurant i frequented, i know he used his indonesian maid as a cook but whenever i'm there, he will cook it for us.

A lot of Singaporean goes there for seafood because it is damn cheap (if you know them and only 2 of it is really good). I remember a meal of live lobsters/crabs/fish/mussels and all other authentic dishes like kampong fried chicken, mee goreng etc etc Only cost RM$150 for 5 person. Which is about only SGD$60. where in Singapore you can find that price? Then also on the way there are many durian plantation to satisfy your durian craze. Then you can buy your groceries along the way and everything is like 1/2 price of what you would expect in Singapore. And not forgetting the cheap petrol after. All in all, it is a cheap and worthy trip.
