I have ordered many flowers from FEF.com and each time I am never disappointed with the quality of the flowers. I tried some other companies for flowers during Valentine’s Day and the quality is horrible, there is once they even staple the stalk of the rose to the wrapper!

Far East Flora has a mobile app called SG Florist on the App Store (universal app) that allows you to sent flowers to your love ones using your iPhone or iPad. Far East Flora has partnered with PayPal for payment on both their website and their iPhone/iPad app and hence making payment is a breeze!

Let’s walk through the whole process.

Loading Screen + Country Selection

FEF.com has branches in Hong Kong as well and hence the country selection.

Surprise + Login

Once the app is loaded, you will get to the surprise screen which display some facts and tips about flowers and occasions (and if you are lucky, you get a discount code). You can shake your iPhone or iPad and new facts and tips will appear.

There is also a login button at the top left hand of the screen for you to login to your FEF.com account. This will load your recipients that you have saved in your FEF.com’s address book.

Shop

The main screen of this app should be the Shop screen which it allows you to browse all kind of flowers and gifts.

Hand Bouquets

Most of the time, I like to give hand bouquets, so I just tapped on the “Hand Bouquets” sub-category and it will show me a list of hand bouquets flowers with their names and pricing. You can also sort by date added, highest priced and lowest priced. If you do not like the detailed viewed, you can also switched to the grid view (which I do not really like).

Flower Details

Tapping on any flowers’ name, will bring you to more details about the flowers like the description of the flowers, earliest delivery timing as well as the option of adding it to your shopping cart.

Shopping Bag

They do not literally use the term Shopping Cart, but instead they just use Shopping Bag. Once you tapped “Add to Bag” a prompt will appear telling you that you have successfully added the flower to your shopping bag and whether you want to switch to the Shopping Bag screen so you can checkout immediately.

Checkout

Since I always used my PayPal account for FEF.com because it is much easier (just login to PayPal and click Pay) to checkout compared to native Credit Card payment. I tapped on “Pay with PayPal” and it will bring me to PayPal payment page where you have to login to PayPal to process your payment. If you like to see the breakdown of the cost, you can click on the Down Arrow at the top right hand of the screen.

Completed

Once you have logged-in to PayPal and click Pay, it will redirect you back to FEF.com where you can enter the details of your recipient. Do note that at this time, payment is not yet made. Only after you entered your recipient details and click Pay, then the payment will be processed.

As you can see after I keyed in my recipient details and click Pay, my transaction is completed and I received a confirmation email from FEF.com immediately.

Its differentiating factors from local banks’s iPhone app such as OCBC or DBS/POSB is the access to financial information (deposit/exchange rates, unit trust prices, gold/silver prices) and calculators for personal loans/home equity/financial services.

There is also an augmented reality view that allows you to see latest card promotions/privileges and nearest UOB branches/ATMs. I don’t particulary find that feature useful though.

My favourite feature of this app is the mobile cash feature. What it simply does it allows you to use your mobile phone to withdraw cash from ATM without the need of an ATM card. When I first heard about it, I was like WTF.

A neater feature built on top of it, is that it even allows you to send money to your friend and even if he is not a UOB customer, he still can withdraw the money from any UOB ATMs.

Mobile Cash

Step 1

So how does it work? Upon launching the UOB Mobile Banking app, go to Mobile Cash and select the recipient you want to send the cash to. By default, your name should already be in the list (for you to send money to yourself). Since you are not transferring the money to any bank account, no account number is needed, just the recipient name and his mobile number.

Add Recipient In iBanking

The only down side is that you can’t add the recipient using the app itself. So you have to login to the normal Internet Banking via your computer browser to add them or call the UOB Call Centre to get them to add that for you if you are outside.

Select Recipient / Withdrawal Password

On top of selecting the recipient name and specifying the amount to send, you would also need to specify a 6 digit pin that you would need to tell your recipient.

Step 2

Success / SMS

Once that is done, your recipient will receive a text message and it will contain the transaction code. Using this transaction code and the 6 digit pin that you provided, he can then proceed on to any UOB ATM.

One final verification is the OTP that will be send to your recipient mobile number after he keyed in the 6 digit pin and the transaction code at the ATM. So once he keyed in the OTP, the money you sent to him will be dispensed by the ATM.

Of course there are some security checks in place for such a useful feature and here they are:

• The sender must register a list of recipients, their relationship with the sender, and the recipients’ personal information (NRIC and mobile numbers, name) before any transfer can take place
• An instant SMS-notification and next-day follow up letter will be sent to the sender upon registration, confirming recipient details
• An SMS of the mobile cash transaction with the specific reference number is sent to the recipient. This SMS instruction is valid for 24-hours and the sender can cancel a transaction at any time prior to expiry or cash withdrawal by the recipient
• A separate withdrawal password which the sender should communicate to the recipient. This is to guard against the loss of the recipient’s mobile device
• The recipient is prompted for the One-Time Password (OTP) upon withdrawal at the UOB ATM
• The transaction is automatically voided should the ATM detect a pre-determined number of invalid password attempts
• A maximum cumulative transfer amount of S$500 per day per sender
• A recipient can receive only one transaction a day

I find it pretty neat! I hope all the banks will adopt this!

An Android app is on the way followed by Blackberry and mobile web version next year. A native iPad App is also in the works.

Basically, Mood diary is a collection of moods and feelings that you pen down at any time of the day. Thus memories will not be lost and you can relive the precious moments!

What is missing from the status updates and micro blogging tools such as Twitter is the ability to retain memories. Although everything is stored inside the databases, it is hard to look back because there is not much meaning in a 140 character status update, and it is hard to click back all the time to view the status updates you have written back then. Blogging was a form to retain memories in the past, however, as people get busier with their lives, it is hard to set aside time to retain memories. Thus this application hopes to combine the power of micro blogging, pictures which speak a thousand words, and the ability to retain memories to bridge this gap.

Citi Alerts is an SMS service that notifies you automatically when a banking activity such as a salary credit or a credit card charge occurs. It also allows you to access your banking and card information on-demand via two-way SMS.

There are two ways you can be alerted using Citi Alerts.
Alerts on Demand allows you to request a variety of information via an SMS to a pre-set number, including your account balance, outstanding credit card bill, and last four credit card transactions.
Here are some examples of Alerts on Demand:

What is Infocomm123?
Infocomm123.sg (“Infocomm123″) is a one-stop portal to get all one’s infocomm answers. Users can post questions on the portal and have fellow users answering them on the popular feature “iAsk. iAnswer“. Aside from this useful feature, there are a plethora of articles on infocomm topics on Big Fact Book. Interactive starter kits, e-Government guides and calendar of infocomm events are also all found on Infocomm123.

Think of it as Yahoo Answers but in a more local context and the topics revolve around Infocomm Technology. It just takes you 5 minutes of your time to register (no email activation is required) and you after that you can proceed on in asking your question. Most of the questions asked have a reply and there are rewards for people who reply to questions, which I will talk about in the X-Box Xtravanganz.

iLike. iLink Contest
