Went to the Lenovo IdeaCentre A720 Launch at BoConcept located in Paragon Shopping Centre.

There are 2 products being launched yesterday, one is the Lenovo IdeaCentre A720 (which is the main highlight) retailing for SGD$2,699 and the other is the Lenovo IdeaPad Y480 retailing for SGD$1,499.

Lenovo describes the IdeaCentre A720 as the industry’s slimmest 27-inch AIO with a frameless display from just 24.5mm, thinner than a typical club sandwich while the IdeaPad Y480 is a high-performance laptop capable of handling intensive multimedia applications. Personally, I would describe the IdeaPad Y480 as the laptop version of IdeaCentre A720 because the specifications are very similar (same processor, RAM, HDD and graphics card).

Lenovo IdeaCentre A720

IdeaCentre A720
The Lenovo IdeaCentre A720 will be available from the first week of June 2012 and will be retailing for SGD$2,699.

One of my favourite feature of the IdeaCentre A720 is able to make it lie flat like the photo I took below, this allows you to make it into a cheaper Microsoft Surface (BTW, MS Surface 2.0 is selling for SGD$30,000+ in Singapore). The IdeaCentre A720 is capable of 10-point multi-touch which is great for games like Fruit Ninja. Unfortunately Windows 7 still suck with touch UI, so the multi-touch is pretty useless outside of the applications.

I did ask whether users who bought the IdeaCentre A720 will get to upgrade to Windows 8 for free, but the answer given was no plans have been made yet, so I am guessing most likely not.

IdeaCentre A720 – Lie Flat

IdeaCentre A720 – Back View

IdeaCentre A720 – Back View Ports

Note that the Blue USB Port supports USB3 while the Black USB Port is USB2.

IdeaCentre A720 – Left View Ports

An interesting feature of the IdeaCentre A720 is that it supports HDMI In, this means that it can be used as a display for other media players. Other features include a TV Tuner and a Blu-ray ROM.

IdeaCentre A720 – Right View Ports

IdeaCentre A720 – Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard

IdeaCentre A710 – Hinge

The material used are all plastic (including the keyboard) except for the hinge which is made of aluminum. Does anyone notice that the design of the bundled keyboard is similar to Apple Wireless keyboard?

Both the IdeaCentre A720 and the IdeaPad Y480 comes with Lenovo Enhanced Experience 3 (EE3) for Windows 7.

EE3 certified products feature supreme Windows start-up performance and other optimization features. These products, with their traditional spinning disk hard drive (HDD), can start on average 40 percent faster than typical Windows 7 PC users, thanks to Lenovo’s RapidBoot technology. RapidBoot uses optimized processes and hardware settings to allow Lenovo PCs to boot up faster.

EE3 certified Lenovo PCs boot up in 24 seconds on average, while the typical Windows 7 PC trails with an average time of 41 seconds.

IdeaCentre A720 – 1 Minute To Boot

Personally I am a bit skeptical when it comes to boot time, no way can a Windows with pre-installed software boot faster than a native Windows. Whenever I get a computer from manufacturers for review, the first thing I do is to uninstall all those crap that came with it.

I did a test on the IdeaCentre A720 (Prototype) and it took 1 minute to boot right after we press the power on button. I want to see how the final product will be able to boot in 24 seconds. Even on my MacBook Air with SSD, it took 30 seconds to boot.

IdeaPad Y480
The Lenovo IdeaPad Y480 will be available from the first week of May 2012 and it will be retailing for SGD$1,499. I did not played much with the IdeaPad Y480 and hence I can’t comment anything on it but I took some pictures of it.

I paid an addition SGD$25 for shipping as I am sharing it with Benjamin and this SSD only cost me SGD$220. Sim Lim Square’s Fuwell is selling it for SGD$321 (as of 8th March 2012).

I still can’t find the time to install it on my 4 years old desktop, but it should pro-long the lifespan of it for 1-2 more years before I changed to a Mac!

Ubuntu For Android looks interesting. I think more information and a live demo will be unveiled in Mobile World Congress 2012 (MWC) next week.

Ubuntu For Android

What I gathered after reading the official site in the link above is that you can install or rather dual boot Ubuntu into Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and above.

When using it as a mobile phone, you will use your Android phone per normal. However, when you connect the phone to a monitor through HDMI and a keyboard/mouse through USB Host mode, the Ubuntu OS within Android boots and you can use it like a normal PC.

According to the features, when your phone is connected, you can answer calls, reply to SMSes all within the Ubuntu itself without the need to touch your phone.

Of course, having to dual boot two OSes requires high hardware requirements and hence you need to have at least a dual core 1GHz Android phone with at least 512MB of RAM.

Introduction

Ubuntu for Android provides a full desktop experience, including office software, web browsing, email and media applications, on Android phones docked to a screen and keyboard. Thanks to tight integration with the Android service layer, the transition between the two environments is seamless, making it easy to access the phone’s services from the desktop when docked.

Technical specifications

Ubuntu for Android requires minimal custom hardware enablement, allowing fast and cost-efficient core integration. It requires a core based on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) or any subsequent version.

Ubuntu and Android share the same kernel. When docked, the Ubuntu OS boots and runs concurrently with Android. This allows both mobile and desktop functionality to co-exist in different runtimes.

Shared services and applications are delivered using a Convergence API module which ensures the tight integration between desktop and mobile environments. Work is balanced across the cores of the phone. When the handset is not docked, both CPU cores transfer their full power to Android.

Hardware Requirements

Dual-core 1GHz CPU

512 MB RAM

Video acceleration: shared kernel driver with associated X driver;Open GL, ES/EGL

Storage: 2GB for OS disk image

HDMI: video out with secondary frame buffer device

USB host mode

Targus releases 2 mice using the Blue Trace technology, Targus Wireless Blue Trace Mouse (AMW50AP-53) which is retailing for SGD$29.90 and the other is Targus Compact Blue Trace Mouse (AMU75AP-54) retailing for SGD$18.90.

The wireless frequency is 2.4GHz and I kinda like how the wireless receiver is being held. There is a magnet at the back of the mouse which is used to hold the receiver!

Bought a packet of 3 PowerPac Plug Keys from Challenger at Funan for SGD$0.90 (after 20% member’s discount is SGD$0.72). This Plug Key will convert your 3-pin plug socket to support a 2-pin plug power cable.

Since Singapore was once part of the British, we follow the British BS 1363 standard.

BS 1363 is a British Standard which specifies the most common type of domestic AC power plugs and sockets that are used in the United Kingdom. Distinctive characteristics of the system are shutters on the line and neutral socket holes, and a fuse in the plug. It has been adopted in many former British overseas territories; Ireland, Malaysia and Singapore have equivalent national standards. BS 1363 was introduced in 1947 as one of the new standards for electrical wiring in the United Kingdom used for post-war reconstruction. The plug replaced the former BS 546 plug, which is still found in old installations or in special applications.

Anyone like me who find it troublesome that in Singapore, some electrical appliances requires a 2-pin plug while some others requires a 3-pin one?

I like it because it has individual switch to control power to each of the 3 3-pin sockets.

I find it weird that some countries do not have the concept of switching off an individual switch on a power strip but rather leaving all the switches always on, if you look at Belkin Surge Protectors, there is no on/off switch available.

Bought the D-Link DNS-320 (SGD$109) and 2x Western Digital 3.5″ SATA Caviar Black 1TB hard drive (SGD$115 each) at Comex 2011 last weekend.

I still bought back a D-Link NAS after my bad experience with D-Link DNS-323 because the DNS-320 is meant for my mom’s office and D-Link service center is just located behind my mom’s office in case anything happens.

I wanted to get the Synology DS211j instead but unfortunately it is out of my mom’s budget. I initially also wanted to get the Buffalo LinkStation Pro Duo, but after reading SmallNetBuilder’s review on it, I decided to give it a miss as the review was pretty bad.

The differences between DNS-320 and DNS-323 is quite significant. Now the hard disk is loaded via the top which makes it slightly easier to install as compared to front loading. The user interface has also been revamped and now it bares no resemblance to the usual orange/white/grey D-Link’s interface, it is a much welcomed change but it is a little laggy though. So far for NAS, I have not seen a better web interface than Synology’s DiskStation Manager (DSM).

For a more technical review, check out my friend, shadowandy, blog post entitled D-Link DNS-320 – Layman speed test.

Went to StarHub Shop at VivoCity on the 24th June 2011 to apply for MaxOnline Infinity which is Starhub fibre Internet service. I chose the MaxInfinity Elite plan which has a download speed of 150Mbps, upload speed of 75Mbps and international speed of 15Mbps. It cost SGD$82.18 per month for a 2 year contract.

They did not tell me when they are coming to setup the fibre Internet service. I waited a month and they called me on the 3rd week of July 2011 saying they will come on 26th July 2011 to install the service.

StarHub is forcing us to use the crappy Huawei HG256s Residential Gateway (RG) and there is no way to bypass it yet. I heard the wireless on it is just pure shitty. So the typical setup would be:

Terminal Point (TP) -> Optical Network Terminal (ONT) -> Residential Gateway (RG) -> Router

If order to get your router to do the routing you need to bridge the connection between the RG and Router.

Step 1: You need to disable WLAN and DHCP on the RG

Disable WLAN on RG

Disable DHCP on RG

Step 2: Enable DMZ on the RG

Enable DMZ on RG

My RG’s IP address is 192.168.2.1 and my router WAN Port is connected to my RG’s LAN Port 1 with WAN Static IP address set to 192.168.2.2 on the router.

My router IP address is 192.168.3.1.

RG (192.168.2.1) -> DMZ (192.168.2.2) WAN -> Router (192.168.3.1)

Step 3: Setting WAN Static IP on the Router

Setting WAN Static IP on Router

Router IP Setup

That is basically it. I have disabled all the firewall features on the RG side and let the router handle it. DDNS on the other hand is handled by the RG instead of the router.

DDNS on RG

Since the router is behind RG’s DMZ, port forwarding is handled by the router.

Port Forwarding on Router

BEFORE (Cable): Speedtest – MaxOnline Ultimate (100Mbps)

AFTER (Fibre): Speedtest – MaxOnline Inifnity Elite (150Mbps)

I am unable to obtain 150Mbps speed though. I am wondering if Speedtest can output more than 100Mbps. However I am able to obtain about 80Mbps on 2 computers while doing Speedtest simultaneously. I did my speedtest on StarHub’s Speedtest before doing it on Speedtest.net.

Upon further investigation, I am actually on 150Mbps, I downloaded a iPad 2 firmware update (iOS 4.3.5) from Apple and I am getting about 16MB/s to 18MB/s which is about 128Mbps to 144Mbps. Woot!

OS X Lion
Mac OS X Lion is finally released, it cost USD$29.99 in the Mac AppStore. I was downloading this at 11MB/s (megabytes not megabits) yesterday night! If you have a slower Internet connection, Lion will be made available on a USB thumb drive through the Apple Store (Singapore) for SGD$88. Mac OS X Lion is the eighth major release of Mac OS. It has more than 250 new features such as new Multi-Touch gestures, system-wide support for full screen apps, Mission Control, Mac AppStore, Launchpad and a new re-designed Mail app.

It seems that Xcode 4.1 (AppStore link) is free (usual USD$4.99) for OS X Lion only and FaceTime is included in OS X Lion (AppStore Link) (usual USD$0.99).

MacBook Air
MacBook Air now includes the Intel Sandy Bridge Core i5/i7 processor, Thunderbolt I/O and backlit keyboard. It also seems that the white MacBook is phrased out in favor of the lowest end MacBook Air which starts at SGD$1,288. MacBook Air supports Bluetooth 4.0 with Bluetooth Low Energy.

Mac Mini
Similar with the MacBook Air, the Mac mini also receives the updated Intel Sandy Bridge Core i5/i7 processor and Thunderbolt I/O treatment and it seems that the optical drive got ditched by Mac mini. The death of CD is sooner than you think! Also Mac mini supports Bluetooth 4.0 and Bluetooth Low Energy. In the higher end Mac mini (SGD$1,088) discrete graphics (AMD Radeon HD 6630M) is being supported for the first time.

Thunderbolt Display
Looks like Apple rebranded Cinema Display to Thunderbolt Display. It now supports Thunderbolt and acts as a docking station for MacBook Pro/Air with a Thunderbolt cable and MagSafe connector. It is a 27″ monitor (16:9 – 2560px x 1440px) with LED backlight and IPS panel. It has built-in FaceTime HD camera and microphone to make video calls and ambient light sensor to adjusts your screen brightness accordingly. It is going for SGD$1,348!

On the night of the PC Show 2011, my brother called me and said the D-Link DGS-1008D (which I got back in IT Show 2009) switch in my room is spoilt and there is no power being supplied to it. Went back home, tested and verified that it is the case.

Went down the next day to PC Show 2011 again and got back the same switch, D-Link DGS-1008D switch, for SGD$85. I was expecting them to change the model number since it is totally a new design, but unfortunately it remains the same. This time I got 2 pieces instead of just 1 as I will be placing the additional switch in the living room to facilitate the switch to Fibre Internet.

I am also using a 15″ MacBook Pro for work and I have a power adapter at work, it has been wired so nicely that it makes removing it very difficult and hence I decided to get a spare power adapter that allows me to bring it along when I am on call.

Apple’s iMac has been refreshed, bumping up the processor to Sandy Bridge while the unibody design remains the same. The last refresh happened in October 2010 where it got bumped to Core i3, i5 or i7 CPUs.

Here is what’s new in a nutshell:

Sandy Bridge Quad-core Intel Core i5 and i7 processors across the line.

Thunderbolt technology for high-performance peripherals with data transfer rates up to 20x faster than USB 2.0 and up to 12x faster than FireWire 800.

FaceTime HD camera, previously known as iSight

New AMD Radeon HD graphics processor with performance up to 3x faster than before

21.5-inch: 2.5GHz – SGD$1,648

Intel Core i5 2.5GHz Quad-Core

4GB (two 2GB) memory

500GB hard drive

AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 512MB

1920 x 1080 resolution

21.5-inch: 2.7GHz – SGD$2,048

Intel Core i5 2.7GHz Quad-Core

4GB (two 2GB) memory

1TB hard drive

AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512MB

1920 x 1080 resolution

27-inch: 2.7GHz – SGD$2,348

Intel Core i5 2.7GHz Quad-Core

4GB (two 2GB) memory

1TB hard drive

AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512MB

2560 x 1440 resolution

27-inch: 3.1GHz – SGD$2,748

Intel Core i5 3.1GHz Quad-Core

4GB (two 2GB) memory

1TB hard drive

AMD Radeon HD 6970M with 1GB

2560 x 1440 resolution

I thought this would be the iMac I will be getting, but wasn’t impressed with the change and pricing. So I guess I will wait for the “proper” refresh as in change of design and USB3.0! Anyway just for fun, here is my ideal iMac specifications based on the current generation:

27-inch – SGD$3,702.60

Intel Core i7 3.4GHz Quad-Core

8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM – 2x4GB

1TB Serial ATA Drive

AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5

Magic Trackpad

I wanted the “1TB Serial ATA Drive + 256GB Solid State Drive” but it is way too expensive (SGD$813.20 more). Not a fan of Magic Mouse, I will probably end up using a Razer Mouse instead and hence I opted for the Magic Trackpad. I am also not a fan of Wireless keyboard so I opted for the wired keyboard. AppleCare is a must for all Apple computers because the parts and labor are way too expensive.

After much hesitation, finally got a new graphics card to replace mine old Leadtek PX9800GX2 1GB DDR3 which gives me BSOD EVERY SINGLE TIME I run any 3D games. This problem occurred just after a year! RMA onced, but the problem came back to my RMAed set once my warranty is over! If I just use it normally (Programming/Internet/Work), it will work fine. But these task does not do justice to my Core 2 Quad with 8GB of RAM!

I thought that I am getting an iMac soon and will not need a graphics card, but after thinking for a few weeks, I think that is still a long way! I am guessing the iMac will be refreshed with a new design in September 2011 and that is the time I am going to get it!.

At first I wanted to get XFX Radeon HD 5830 1GB GDDR5 (SGD$299), but Fuewell at Sim Lim Square ran out of stock, so I ask the guy introduce me a graphics card with a budget of about SGD$300. He recommend me MSI N460GTX Cylone 768D5 (SGD$329) or Asus ENGTX460 TOP 768MD5 (SGD$319). Both come with 3 years warranty. In the end I chose MSI N460GTX Cylone 768D5 because the fan looks cooler! I paid by cash and I got SGD$4 off! So end up paying SGD$325. By the way, now you can pay NETS with no additional surcharge at Fuwell because they have manage to negotiate with NETS to keep the transaction fee low.

When I posted my pictures of Iomega 1st Blogging Event which happened yesterday, many thought that Iomega is dead after their Zip Drive failed to penetrate the market because of the widespread of USB flash drives. But in fact they have been bought over by EMC which is a Fotune 500 company and specializes in data storage for USD$213 million.

But yeap, now they are back. I kinda like Iomega products, I got their 100MB, 250MB and 750MB Zip Drives and I got a few old computers which is using their CD Writer and it is still working till today. BTW, TDK DVD Writer sucks, mine was spoilt before even reaching 2 years.

EMC acquisition of Iomega is to bring their storage technology to SMEs and home users at a more affordable price. The selling point of Iomega network and portable harddrives is not the harddrive itself but the software that comes with it.

Iomega vClone is one such software and it allows you to clone your computer into a harddrive and run it at on another computer as if it is your own personal computer. They have partnered with VMware for this to happen.

Capture a complete virtual image of your PC — including the operating system, all applications, your settings, and all your files to your Iomega hard drive. Access the cloned copy and use it seamlessly on another computer, just as if you’re working from your own PC. When you reconnect, automatically sync your data to your primary PC – everything is always up to date. Only Iomega offers this powerful solution.

Iomega Products Offering

Iomega Harddrive Features

Another technology they built into their eGo portable harddisk drive is the Iomega Drop Guard feature which protects the drive when dropped up to 1.3m. But seriously, I hope I do not ever drop my harddrive.

I did ask where is Iomega RMA center, they just told me it is in Sim Lim Square but did not give me a specific address. After Googling, I found out Iomega products are being distributed by Acecom and their service center has move to Ubi. Here is the address:

No 1 Ubi View #03-11
Focus One, Singapore 408555
Tel: (65) 6326-4098 / (65) 6326-4097
Fax: (65) 6509 0825
Mon to Fri : 9:00 to 18:00
Sat/Sun/PH : Close

Iomega Aluminium UltraMax & UltraMax Plus External Harddrive

I am pretty interested in the Iomega UltraMax External Harddrive as it will be a great companion to my Mac in terms of design and I shall use it for my Time Machine backup.

Was invited to Intel exclusive blogger event on Monday, 7th June 2010, at Starhub center which is where the Intel office is. My first impression of the office is that they got tall cubicles!

We are introduce to the latest Intel technology, SSD, Wireless Display, Project “Tangent Bay”, Light Peak, Super Thin Laptops and Intel’s AppStore!

SSD

Memory vs CPU Upgrades

The bottle neck of our computer is no longer our ram or graphics card and even processer, but our hard disk drive. A computer with SSD with just 3GB or ram will outperform a computer with 7200rpm HDD with 6GB of ram. Not many applications make use of the extra free ram, not in the eyes of normal consumer, they don’t run virtualization or even Adobe Premium Pro. Anything more than 4GB of ram will not bring significant improvement speed, the money will be put to better use in SSD.

I always wanted a SSD, regretted not getting it in Taiwan as it is cheaper by about SGD$70 over there at Taiwan’s Guanghua Computer Center. 300GB to 600GB SSD is expected to be release before the end of the year and that will push down the prices for 40GB/60GB/80GB SSD.

I have the misconception of SSD that once the limited 5 years lifespan is up, I can no longer use the drive and my data is gone. That is not true, you can no longer write to the drive, but you still can read from it.

Official Site: Intel SSD

Wireless Display

Netgear Setup Box

I was blown away by the Wireless Display. You just need a small setup box connected to your TV via HDMI and you can stream your laptop screen OTA to the TV! It also streams audio to your TV as well.

It is using 802.11g technology capable of delivering 54Mbps of bandwidth. The secret lies in the Intel Wireless Display built into your laptop where it compresses and encodes the signal and when the signal is sent OTA to the setup box, it gets decoded and decompressed and outputted to your TV!

Netgear is the only maker of the setup box at the moment but more will come soon!

Official Site: Intel Wireless Display

Tangent Bay

Tangent Bay

Tangent Bay is a project by Intel that brings 3 touch screens placed below the screen and above the keyboard. You can drag windows down to these screen even playing a movie there as well. The reason of putting 3 touch screens instead of a single piece is because of cost and availability. It is easier and cheaper to get 3 touch screens the size of a normal smart phone then to make one specially for laptops.

This is coming in Q1 2011.

Gizmodo: Intel’s “Tangent Bay” Laptop Concept Has 3 OLED Multi-Touch Screens Above the Keyboard

Light Peak

Light Peak

We have maxed out the bandwith of copper cables and that is where light comes in. The longest cable length you can go without slowing down the transfer speed with a single USB3 cable is 3m and for USB2 is 2m. For light peak, the limit on the length is limited by transmit power.

I wonder what comes after light?

Intel Research: Light Peak Technology

Super Thin Laptops

Dell Adamo

I call this MacBook Air for the masses! The chips are soldered directly on the motherboard and thus reducing heat output and hence reducing the need for fan or a cooling system. It is a reduction of 32% in size.

App Store
Intel also jumped onto the App Store bandwagon with its own App Store called AppUp Center. It features apps for netbook for platforms like Windows, Moblin, Meego. It also allows OEM manufacturers to have a co-branded store front. Intel’s own Moblin will eventually be replace with Meego

Intel Adverts
We are shown some funny Intel adverts and the people acted in the video are all Intel’s staff! Here is my favourite advert:
