After 2 years in Kindergarten, 6 years in Primary school, 4 years in Secondary school, 3 years in Polytechnic and 3 1/2 years in University, I have finally completed my course of study after 18 1/2 years! Went to Taiwan with Weiquan (knew him since Polytechnic), Kelvin and Hong Jun for our graduate trip for 7 days 6 nights.

Day 01 (Monday, 7th December 2009)

  • China Airlines flight CI0752 departed at 10:30am. There was a delay of about 45 minutes because one of the runway in Changi Airport was closed to allow another airplane to do emergency landing.
  • Reached Tao Yuan International Airport Terminal One at about 3.30pm and took the Free Go bus to our Nei Jiang Hotel (內江商旅).
  • Free Go bus cost NT$240 for a round trip and hotel cost NT$2380 per night.
  • Reached our hotel at about 5.30pm and spend about 1 hour to get the Wireless Router up and running but unfortunately it could not work because the voltage in Taiwan is only 110 volts and we need 230 volts. End up using Windows 7 Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) which is a pain in the ass to set up.
  • Dinner was at Modern Toilet (便所主题餐厅) located in Ximending (西門町).
  • After dinner, we walked almost the whole of Ximending (西門町)!

  • Lunch was at Mr.J Restaurant (Mr.J義法廚房).
  • Went to Taipei 101 and went up the Sky Observatory.
  • After Taipei 101, went to walk around New York New York (纽约纽约) and Shin Kong Mitsukoshi (星光三越).

Day 04 (Thursday, 10th December 2009)

  • Had breakfast at McDonald’s. The McDonald’s breakfast there is half the price of Singapore!
  • Took the Taiwan High Speed Rail (台灣高鐵) to Taichung (台中).
  • Went to our Minsu (民宿) called Tomato Rooms which is located near Feng Jia (逢甲).
  • After depositing our bags there, we went to Yi Zhong Street (一中街) to do some shopping as Feng Chia Night Market (逢甲夜市) only open after 6pm.

  • Went to Luxy but unfortunately there is some private event there and we ended back up in Ximending (西門町) and we caught a movie, Law Bidding Citizen.
  • Law Bidding Citizen is good! Quite similar style to Prison Break.

Took my last exams paper in NUS last Thursday on 3rd December 2009. It was an evening paper so it lasted from 5pm till 7pm. So technically I have graduated, but I can only double confirm it when my results are out on the 22nd December 2009.

Looking back last year on the 14th December 2008, I was also going to Taiwan.

This will be my second visit to Taiwan, this trip should be focusing a lot on food. I will be going with my NUS classmates whom I knew since year 1, shout out to Weiquan (knew him since Polytechnic), Kelvin and Hong Jun.

My flight, CI0752, will depart on the 7th December 2009 at 10:30am and I will be coming back via the flight, CI0751, on the 13th December 2009, reaching Singapore at 8:45pm.

I will be going with Li Xiang on a seperate trip to Hong Kong on the 19th to 27th December 2009.

Went to Desaru for a 2 days 1 night trip with my family (6 of us) on Saturday. It is SGD$178 per pax. It is organized by the Ngan/Gan Clan Association (my mom’s surname is Ngan). We gathered at the association at 7am early in the morning. There are 27 people in the tour group including the 6 of us, majority are aunties and uncles. Surprising with them around, the bus left at about 7.12am which is pretty punctual. I would think that if the group contains mostly teenagers, it would probably left at 7.30am instead.

There is not much jam on the causeway this time round. This is also the first time I used the new checkpoint in Johor Bahru since it opens its door on 16th December 2008.

Day 1
Breakfast was a Tim Sum breakfast at Restoran Chaw Yuan. Food was not bad especially the Chee Cheong Fun and the chicken congee.

Next we are brought to Yong Sheng Food Gift Shop. Some of the food gifts has pretty interesting and nice packaging especially for wedding or baby first year birthday.

After the food gift shop, we are brought to a temple and there are lots of dogs there!

Lunch was at Restoran Sungai Emas where they are famous for their baby lobster, I find it just average. There was a nearby shop called Se Yuan Bakery where they sell pineapple pastries freshly bake from the oven. Taste pretty good as they are fresh and piping hot, but once it is cooled, I wonder will it taste as nice.

We make a brief stop at some Herbal Garden mini plantation where Li Xiang took plenty of pictures as it was pretty relevant to her Final Year Project (FYP).

The next stop was Desaru Fruit Farm. It was pretty interesting to see the trees of the fruits and how they are grow as you can’t find it in anywhere in Singapore besides the Zoo where is nothing compared to there. There is even a mini zoo inside the farm. After about 30 minutes around the fruit farm, we are brought to a “lecture room” where they wanted to sell Honey to us, similar to what they did in Taiwan. This honey comes from the bees which are used to pollinate the fruits, these bees are reared by the farm. After the boring lecture, we have our fruits buffet. Very disappointing, they taste plain and even the durians are disappointing. I am guessing those good fruits are being exported and what is left behind are those “normal” ones.

Finally after the fruit farm, we can finally checked into the Hotel, our hotel is called, The Pulai Desaru Beach. Upon arriving at the hotel, the first impression it gives me was it looks pretty ok. After walking around the hotel, some parts of it looks pretty run down. Even for my room, I have to use keys! Apparently they did not finished installing the card reader for all their rooms yet or they don’t intend to do it.

After we checked in to our hotel, we got 30 minutes to put our stuff and gather with the rest of the group to see Fireflies! The Fireflies Trip was the most interesting part of the tour and I like it the most, a boat will take us into the swap and move around it for 45 minutes! Saw lots and lots of Fireflies, it was my first time seeing Fireflies! I heard from Li Xiang say Fireflies have very short lifespan.

Dinner was at Restoran New Mui Tou, food was average. We also give Humin a birthday cake surprise as that day was her actual birthday!

We reached the hotel about 11pm as the Firefly location is quite far away from the hotel.

Day 2
Woke up at about 6.30am and we took a stroll around the hotel. The beach is very disappointing, it was dirty that I would not even want to take out my slippers and step on the sand. Met up with my parents, my brother and Huimin for breakfast at the Hotel. Food was also average, the nasi lemak was slightly better.

Checked out of the hotel at 10.15am and we went to the Ostrich Farm at Telok Ramunia. The tour guide was telling us that it is owned by a retired Singaporean pilot. I think the Ostrich Farm visit was pretty interesting, I have not seen so many Ostriches before. Ostriches are so cute and look so innocent. Ostrich’s egg are so hard that mother Ostriches need to break the shell for them, if not they will die inside the shell. After the tour around the farm, there was Ostrich meat prepared for us but Li Xiang and I refuse to eat it.

Lunch was at Restoran Makanan Laut and after lunch we are brought to a shop which sells salted fish!

Next stop was a durian fest at one of the durians wholesale center, durains there are much better than the Desaru Fruit Farm, but still, I think the better ones are exported out of Malaysia.

Finally some civilization! We are brought to Jusco at Tebrau City. We are only given 95 minutes there. We did a quick window shopping around the mall before settling for an early but light dinner at Old Town. The Old Town there taste better than Singapore’s one and of course it cost only half the price. We did not really shop within Jusco as I think it should look pretty much the same as any hypermarket in Singapore. We left there about 6pm.

Dinner was at Senibong Seafood Village, food was also average but the view is fantastic, overlooking Singapore.

Traffic at the causeway is pretty smooth as well, we got back to Singapore at about 8.30pm.

My Thoughts
I think Desaru is over-hyped, our Sentosa is way better and have much more things to do than Desaru. The only thing I like about this 2 days 1 night trip was the Fireflies Trip and the Ostrich Farm. I also think that the Desaru Fruit Farm is over-hyped as well. If you ask me, save the cash up and go to Redang instead.

I am back from Taiwan! After following the tour from the 15th December 2008 to 21st December 2008, the remaining 12 days (21st December 2008 to 1st January 2009) are on our own free & easy.

Quite lazy to blog everything instead I will make it brief and let the pictures do the talking.

21st December 2008 to the 26th December 2008
We are in Taipei from the 21st December 2008 to the 26th December 2008 and hence we spent the Christmas there.

26th December 2008 to the 29th December 2008
From the 26th December 2008 to the 29th December 2008, we are in Taichung for the Fengjia Night Market (台中逢甲夜市) and on the way to visit my mom’s business partner there. Transportation in Taichung is quite a problem as there is no MRT and we have to take bus, but the problem with Taiwan is that their bus stop sometimes do not look like a bus stop. Luckily Taichung got quite a number of popular mountains as well as the Fengjia Night Market. If not I don’t really see a need to go there.

29th December 2008 to the 31st December 2008
From the 29th December 2008 to the 31st December 2008 we are in Kaohsiung. Transportation in Kaohsiung is much easier as they have MRT there called KMRT, but they are using their own system and hence the Taipei Easy Card is not applicable there. Kaohsiung is not really cold, normally the temperature hovers above 20° Celsius.

31st December 2008 to the 1st January 2009
From the 31st December 2008 to the 1st January 2009 we are in Taoyuan as it is closer to the airport. There is also the 2nd largest countdown in Taiwan after Taipei and we are there to witness it. It was fantastic!

My Summary About Taiwan
It is a difficult task finding public dustbins, public toilets and money changers! Also it seems to me that Taiwanese do not have the habit of helping people to press the “Door Open” button of the lift when people are moving large objects. Communication is a problem to me as my Mandarin is just average. I can speak but it seems that some of the terms we used (we always mixed Malay, English and Mandarin together) is not applicable there. I can’t really read Mandarin characters and most of their menu are in Mandarin and only sometimes there are English “subtitles” to go along with it. Taiwanese are quite poor in English.

I LOVE the weather day, I hardly perspire during my 18 days there but the moment I landed in Singapore, I perspired.

Taiwanese love beef and pork! Other meat types are a little bit more difficult to find there.

Somehow, the taxi drivers there give me a better feeling that they are more honest, friendly and helpful when compared with those taxi drivers in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.

The myth that Asus EEE PC are cheaper in Taiwan is a hoax. Singapore is definitely cheaper and if you get it there, the warranty is in Taiwan only. Luxury brands and some most of the “above average priced stuffs” are also cheaper in Singapore than in Taiwan.

There are are a total of 2 tour groups for this Taiwan Trip. Group A went on the 14th to 20th December 2008 and Group B went on the 15th to 21st December 2008. We belong to Group B.

Day 1 – 15th December 2008 (Monday)
Had breakfast at Changi Airport Terminal 3 and meet up with the tour group at Row 10. Flight SQ878 suppose to depart at 12:25pm but it was delayed till 12:50pm. Plane took off at about 1pm and reached Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (台北中正国际机场) at about 5.15pm. The temperature is about 19 degrees!

The buffet dinner was at 海霸王 and the food kinda suck. That was my first meal in Taiwan!

It is about 2 hours drive from Taoyuan to Taichung. We proceed to Fengjia Night Market (台中逢甲夜市). The tour guide only give us 1 hour to shop there which is definitely not enough!

Checked into Howard Prince Hotel at Taichung at about 11.15pm

Pictures: Taiwan Trip Day #1

Day 2 – 16th December 2008 (Tuesday)
Had breakfast at Howard Prince Hotel. I think it has the best breakfast among all the hotels that we stayed.

We proceed on to Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) at Taichung and on the way we have lunch at Tai-Yi Ecological Education Farm (台一农场). Lunch was average but the ambiance was good. We (Singaporeans) are still not used to the food in Taiwan as we did not even finish half of what is served to us.

We went to Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village (九族文化村) to learn more about Taiwan Aboriginal Heritage and Cultures. This part is damn boring, but opposite the entrance of the village there is this very nice European style garden called European Gardens (歐洲宮廷花園). Due to the limited time, we only manage to take a few photos there.

Checked in at Sun Moon Lake Fenisia Hotel (雲品酒店日月潭) and we stayed there for the remaining part of the day going to Hot Spring and Spa at the hotel. There is even a inbuilt bath tub where the water flows from the hot spring right in your hotel room. The buffet dinner was at the hotel and I am surprise that the ice cream included is Häagen-Dazs. You can even take cans of coke and bottles of Yakult as it is included in the buffer.

This is the BEST hotel we stayed in. Heard it cost SGD$350 per night and it is the 2nd most expensive hotel at Sun Moon Lake area at the moment.

Day 3 – 17th December 2008 (Wednesday)
Breakfast was at the hotel and after that we took a boat ride around Sun Moon Lake and we visited Wen Wu Temple (文武庙). There was some Fa Lun Gong members camping along the stairs along Wen Wu Temple.

We visited 毛王爷之家 where it was like a sales pitch asking us to buy Royal Jelly and Dried Baby Deer grinded into power form, it was said to cure Asthma. Of course we did not buy them as we are totally not interested in it.

Lunch was at 原住民攴厅, it kinda suck.

We visited Chung Tai Chan Monastery (中台禅寺) where we donated NT$180 for good luck. The view was fantastic as it was situated high about the mountains.

Dinner was at the Fenisia Hotel’s ballroom, it was a gala dinner and we played Bingo, the first prize was NT$10,000. The game was really exciting!

Day 4 – 18th December 2008 (Thursday)
Breakfast was at the hotel as well and after breakfast we checked out of Fenisia Hotel.

We went to Taichung Station to take the Taiwan High Speed Rail train to Taipei Train Station.

Lunch was at 顶厨, finally this lunch was something that is more suitable for our taste buds.

We visited Yeliu Stone Park (野柳) to see unique geological features, such as rock formations sculpted by nature, with names that echo their shapes such as Queen’s Head and Fairy Shoe. I kinda like Yeliu, it is windy and the view is excellent!

After that, we wisited Taipei 101 (台北101最高摩天楼). We went up to the Observatory at level 89 as well as the outdoor roof at level 91. The outdoor roof is very windy and freezing cold! The tour guide only give us 1 hour there and we spend the whole hour at the Observatory taking photos and enjoying the view. The lift is amazingly fast, it takes about 40 seconds to go up 81 floors (starts at level 5 and ends at level 89).

We checked in at Taipei Garden Hotel (台北花园酒店) after Taipei 101. The hotel is new and it is near a 24 hours Carrefour! But I hate the hangers the most because you can’t hang in anywhere except the cupboard and the place to put my bath soap is so small! Worst of all, they DO NOT provide free Internet Access. You have to pay NT$300 for a day worth of Internet Access. I managed to tap onto a unsecured wireless network from my room and managed to connect it to the Internet. This is the ONLY hotel that I stayed in that do not provide free Internet Access.

Dinner was free and easy at Shilin Night Market (士林夜市). We tried the famous extra large chicken cutlet (好大大雞排). It was big but the bone was included and that makes up 1/2 of the size. I still prefer the Singapore’s version. Tried the Big Biscuit wrap Small Biscuit (大餅包小餅) but it tastes kinda plan. For dessert we have the banana milk shake and Peanut Snow Ice (花生泡泡冰). The 花生泡泡冰 is fantastic!

After we are back at the hotel. We went to opposite the 24 hours Carrefour to buy instant noodle as Li Xiang was craving for it!

Day 5 – 19th December 2008 (Friday)
As usual breakfast was at the hotel. It seems that all the hotel that we stayed served VERY similar food. We got kinda sick of it!

After breakfast went to take a group photo with both Group A and B at 自有廣場 as Group A is leaving to Taoyuan later in the day.

Went to Fisherman’s Wharf (渔人码头) where the place is used in the filming of Meteor Garden. Nothing much to see there in the day.

Proceed on to Tamshui Old Street (淡水老衔) where we bought some Metal Egg (阿婆鉄蛋) to bring back to Singapore.

Lunch was at 五角船板. The food there was unique and I love the ambience and the design of the building. See the photos and you will get what I mean!

After lunch, we went to Pi-Siou Arts Center (天禄艺品中心). It is not really an arts center but a place where you will get to spend money on Feng Shui (風水). I gave my Chinese name and Chinese Zodiac to the master and it predicted some things correctly! I was SHOCKED! It was my first time trying something like this (fortune telling).

He said I am smart, I got money but I will not save it, I am extremely good in one area and I am healthy. Basically what he said are all true! He then asked me to buy a jade pendant to counter the “I will not save” part, but it cost like NT$8999 (SGD$450). I rejected and he was not pushy at all.

Even Li Xiang fortune was also told correctly. He said Li Xiang like to save money and she is not healthy especially around the stomach area (Li Xiang got gastric). I was shocked x2! Of course he asked Li Xiang to buy a different colour jade pendant to counter the “not healthy” part.

We are brought to Ximenting (西门盯) to do some shopping. The things there are not really cheap, in fact some of the stuffs are more expensive than Singapore. There are quite a lot of movie theatres there. Watching movie in Taiwan is really an expensive hobby. It cost like SGD$12 per ticket.

Dinner was at 夏慕尼. It was a Teppanyaki dinner and it is the BEST teppanyaki dinner I have ever eaten! It cost NT$980 (SGD$50) per pax.

After dinner, we went to 五分埔 to do some shopping. There are quite a lot of things there, prices are quite reasonable but you can’t really bargain with them.

Pictures: Taiwan Trip Day #4 (Part IV) & Day #5
Pictures: Taiwan Trip Day #5 (Part II)

Day 6 – 20th December 2008 (Saturday)
After breakfast at the hotel, we proceed on to National Palace Museum (故宫博物院). The museum houses the largest collection of priceless Chinese art pieces collected over many centuries by Chinese emperors and royal families. This part is so boring that I almost fall asleep walking from one exhibit to another!

After the boring part, lunch was at 金品茶楼小笼包. There are so many types of 小笼包. As Li Xiang do not eat pork, I have to eat her share of 小笼包 as well and I practically eat like 12 original flavour 小笼包 alone! The 小笼包 is nice!

We are suppose to go to Wulai (乌来) to see the Wulai Falls (乌来瀑布), but instead we went to 九份 to do some shopping as some of the group members wanted to buy the Pineapple Tarts (鳳梨酥). The view is kinda nice and it is cooling as 九份 is basically at the top of a mountain.

Dinner was at 海霸王, the food is just average only!

After dinner, we proceed on to Taoyuan as it is nearer to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

Checked in to Holiday Inn Express. The hotel is not bad, kinda small but I like the business decoration within the hotel room. It has a proper desk to place your laptop with a table lamp. There is even an alarm clock plus music player for you to dock your iPod!

Pictures: Taiwan Trip Day #5 (Part III) & Day #6

Day 7 – 21st December 2008 (Sunday)
Breakfast is at the hotel, the cafe area is very small and they didn’t even check to see if I am staying at the hotel. Of course the breakfast variety is very limited as well.

We left together with the tour group to the airport and later on the coach uncle fetch us to Taipei Train Station. We paid him NT$200. A total of 5 of us stayed backed. The remaining 3 alighted at Shilin.

Friday, 18th July 2008
I had a short weekend (Friday to Sunday) trip with Li Xiang, mum and my uncle (mum’s elder brother) to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. My uncle drove there. It is about 340km from Singapore all the way to Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur. We supposed to set off at 2pm but somehow my grandfather GTAed the car without telling anyone about it. When we managed to contact him, it is already about 3.30pm and my uncle has to send him home first before driving the car. So we are late by about 2 hours.

On our way to KL, my uncle got distracted as we keep talking and he misses one of the turn on the highway. We reached KL, he also misses a turn to Bukit Bintang and hence we reached out hotel at about 8pm. My uncle is driving at about 130km/h to 140km/h, so technically we would need about 2 hours and 30 minutes to reach KL.

We stayed in The Royale Bintang Hotel. We only booked one room and the price is quite reasonably. We paid RM299 for the first night and RM279 for the 2nd night and it includes a breakfast for 2 excluding tax.

We had dinner at Outback which is located in BBPark just beside our hotel. Food there tastes the same as in Singapore but prices wise, it is definitely cheaper. I think it is also cheaper than Outback in Thailand.

After dinner, we went to take a introductory walk around our hotel. Most of the shopping centers are closed after 10pm, however the streets are still filled with people and cars.

We went back to our hotel about 11pm and Skype with my dad and to have an early rest. The Internet rate is quite reasonable, RM24 for 4 hours and it has to be used within 24 hours from the purchase date.

Saturday, 19th July 2008
Could not sleep the whole night and hence woke up at 7.30am. Had breakfast at Sunflowers Brasserie which is the hotel cafe. The food was lousy and the variety was quite little as well.

After breakfast went to visit “Thong Hock Toys & Foodstuffs” which is a shop/company which my mom’s company has shares in it. While my mum and my uncle talk inside, Li Xiang and I walked around and took random pictures as we are really bored.

Once my mum is done, we took the rail (Rapid KL) to Suria KLCC for our first shopping trip. We stayed there till lunch and then my mum re-joined them for lunch while Li Xiang and I headed to Sungei Wang Plaza to shop.

At about 5pm met up with my mum at The Pavilion. As my mom was early, I asked her to buy tickets for The Dark Night. We wanted the 11pm slot but it left the first 3 rows and hence we settled for the 12.30am slot.

We had a late lunch at Food Republic in Pavilion and the food is good and the variety is similar to that of Singapore’s Food Republic, just cheaper.

Joined one of my uncle’s friend for dinner at a restaurant called Restoran Overseas (Near Berjaya Times Square). The food is fantastic and the Soy Chicken has to be the best Soy Chicken I have ever ate.

Went to Berjaya Times Square to take a look as it is located nearby, was quite disappointed with it as there is nothing much to shop there. Maybe people go there for the Amusement Park only.

We went back our hotel after that to take a rest and left again at 11.30pm for our movie at Pavilion. At 11.30pm, the streets are still filled with people and cars and it was very lively.

The Dark Knight was fantastic and I love the underground level as compared to the bat cave. The show lasted about 2 hours and 30 minutes. My mum got confused after watching the movie and Li Xiang said the movie was boring and slept 3/4 through it.

I don’t like the facilities at the movie theater. The toilet is so small and even guys have to queue up for it. After the movie, we had a hard time finding a toilet and we found it only at the ground floor and it was crowded with people as the toilet is again, small.

However, the movie ticket is cheap, RM12 for a weekend ticket, which is only like SGD$5 and in Singapore the cheapest you can get is SGD$8.00 at Cathay.

But I think VivoCity still has the best movie experience especially the toilet part.

We walked back to out hotel at 3.30am and the streets are still filled with people and cars definitely much more than Orchard Road if we compared the timing.

As usual, woke up at 7.30am and have breakfast at the famous Imbi’s Sun Hong Bak Kut Teh. The taste is slightly different from Singapore, it is more towards the herbal side while in Singapore it is towards the pepper side. But I like the way or the idea that they give you a big claypot of Bak Kut Teh and then you scope whatever you want to your own bowl rather than each a bowl in Singapore.

After breakfast we went to Star Hill Gallery which is located beside Pavilion as my mom wanted to take a look at Loewe. It is like a ghost town inside as I can hardly see a single soul inside.

On our way back to our hotel to checkout, we went to Gloria Jeans Coffees and the prices there are very cheap. It is about SGD$5.60 for a large GJ Ice Chocolate and if we pay using May bank, it is a buy 1 get 1 free offer. So that makes SGD$2.80 per cup, in Singapore the same cup will cost at least SGD$7.

We also pop by to Sungei Wang’s Giant to get some last minute supermarket shopping.

After our hotel check out, we went to Low Yat Plaza to get some IT Stuff. Some of the electronics there are MUCH cheaper than in Singapore. 2 weeks ago, I bought for my mom’s the Microsoft Lifecam VX 3000 for SGD$83 and at there they are selling it at SGD$50 which is almost half price. My uncle immediately bought 2 of it.

My uncle also bought Canon IXUS 800IS for RM599 = SGD$249.47 and I bought a Canon IXUS 860IS for RM1180 = SGD$491.46. The latest pricing for Canon IXUS 860IS in Singapore is SGD$540, see the difference! On top of that the warranty is international.

The last thing my uncle bough is the Canon Pixma i1880 for RM139 = SGD$57.91. In Singapore, it is selling for SGD$99, but the down side is that the warranty is in Malaysia only. But for SGD$58, once it is spoilt, you can just throw it away.

And all the while I thought electronics in Singapore are cheaper.

We left Bukit Bintang at about 1.30pm and we reached Singapore at 3.30pm. This time my uncle is driving 150km/h to 160km/h and hence it only take about 2 hours to reach.

The bottleneck is always at Singapore side regardless whether you are going into Malaysia or coming back into Singapore. It is ALWAYS the Singapore custom holding the queue. I seriously think that Singapore custom need to do better than that.

Petrol in Malaysia is DIRT CHEAP, 1 litre of petrol only cost RM2.70 = SGD$1.12 and in Singapore 1 litre of petrol cost at least SGD$2.20. Malaysia’s government can subsidize so much for their petrol and I wonder why Singapore’s government can’t do that. I only saw Singapore registered cars pumping petrol in the last petrol station when coming back to Singapore.

Overall, I love and enjoy this short trip! Hope there is more to come. I shall learn how to drive to KL someday.

Had a short trip to Kukup, Malaysia with my 9 of my polytechnic friends, Li Xiang, Laily, Suqin, Wayne, Robert, Kee Yong, Serene, Terry, Wenxin.

This is my second time to Kukup, the first time was 11 years back, in 1997.

About Kukup:

Kukup Laut, a very unique and a century old fishing village built entirely on stilts on the sea surrounded by water, is the southernmost village found at the southwest tip of the Peninsular of West Malaysia, and suppose to be the southernmost village found in the Continental of Asia. Located about 70 kilometers away from Johor Bahru, and 20 kilometers from Pontian, Kukup Laut has only one road to access by land. It may be reached by sea boarding ferry leaving World Trade Center in Singapore daily. The entire village is linked by jetty also built on stilts on sea. This place is famous of its seafood. It’s geographically and ideally shadowed by one of the world’s largest mangrove swamp island – Kukup Island along which numerous fish-farms bob up and down on the surface of the Kukup Sea.

We paid SGD$70.00 per person for a 2 day 1 night stay there including transport to-and-fro from Singapore and 4 meals (Lunch and Dinner, Breakfast and Lunch for the next day) The pickup point can be either Jurong East MRT station or Kranji MRT station as both of these stations are near to Woodlands Checkpoint.

We met at 9am at Jurong East MRT, Wayne was late a little and Wenxin forgotten to bring her passport. So we told the female driver to go to Woodlands Checkpoint first while Terry accompany Wenxin home to take her passport. There was a huge jam (as usual) at Woodlands Checkpoint, we cleared the custom eventually and waited a while before Terry and Wenxin cleared the customs. While waiting, the female driver keep coming to tell us are we ready or not but we keep pushing her away saying 10 more minutes. Seriously she got a fucked up working attitude problem right from the start when she picked us up at Jurong East.

When we got into the mini-van, Terry apologized to us and the female driver mumbled something in Malay which we don’t understand.

Anyway, it takes about 3 hours drive to reach Kukup and we reached Kukup about 1pm. Our “water house” was quite deep in, so it took us about 10 minutes to walk in.

Our first impression of the house was, it was huge. The house has 4 rooms and can easily sleep up to 20 people and contain at least 30 to 40 people. And since there are only 10 of us, it was a good thing as we have a lot of space.

While waiting for the late lunch at 3pm, some of us played Mahjong while the rest played Saboteur. Lunch was fried beehoon and chicken curry and the desert is green bean with sweet potato soup.

After the late lunch, we went to take a walk outside (the place we alighted earlier on) as there are some shops and an under construction new jetty. Bought some drinks, snacks and ice cream.

Dinner was BBQ seafood and it is served at 7pm. Dinner consist of stingrays, prawns, satay, otah, fishballs and chicken wings. The chicken wing there is very nice.

After dinner some of them went to sing Karaoke which either the pirated discs are spoiled or the player is lousy as the song skips and some of them are out of tune.

Eventually we went to put firecrackers which we bought earlier on. We spent like RM$108 on the firecrackers. It is illegal to sell or put firecrackers in Malaysia and Singapore but I think since this attract people from Singapore to go over to Malaysia just to put it, the government of Malaysia are not really bothered about it as it helps them boost the tourism.

We watched Lord of The Rings: Return of the King on Channel 5 and after that Guess Guess Guess on Channel U. Some of us concuss while watching Guess Guess Guess while the remainder went to sleep after that.

Woke up at 9am on the next day while we have Nasi Lemak and Roti Prata for breakfast. After breakfast, we went to pack our things and gathered in a room for chitchat and to calculate the expenses we spent.

Left the house at 12.30pm for lunch at the seafood restaurant. I am curious why there are so many Singaporeans who drive all the way there to eat seafood as there are a lot of Singapore registered cars parking around it. Personally, I think the seafood there sucks or perhaps we are not used to it. Long Beach in Singapore can beat it anytime.

The lady boss told us that we still got a boat trip perhaps to the fishing farm but we told her that if there is time we will go as the mini-van is coming to pick us up at 2pm. In the end, we did not go.

On our way out of the restaurant, we saw our neighbours whom just stay beside our water house. We started a conversation and realize that they are only paying RM$70.00 which is like half of what we are paying. But then, they are Malaysians and they drive there so no transport is provided for them.

The driver this time was a young male Chinese driver and he is the exact opposite of the female driver that we had yesterday. His service was excellent and he even brought us to eat durians at the road side and no he is not earning any commission for bringing us there.

The traffic was ok when going back to Singapore except there is an accident along a highway in Malaysia that makes us stuck in the jam for 30 minutes.

We reached Singapore at about 5pm. We asked the driver to drop us at Causeway Point was we wanted to watch Hancock. The movie starts at 7.45pm but lasted only about 85 minutes. The movie was not bad and the visual effect is fantastic.

From now onwards, I shall bring my ez-link card and at least 1 credit card as it felt terrible when I got only about SGD$20 with me, somehow I don’t feel “safe” at all.

If you asked me will I visit Kukup again, I would say perhaps 10 years later as once you are there, there is nothing much for you to do and maybe that is the reason why all the package are only 2 days 1 night.

EDIT: Added another 27 pictures from our disposable underwater camera to our Redang Gallery.

Being the lazy me, I use Ctrl C + Ctrl V from sleepy’s blog and modified a little.

Day 1
My first nite is spent on a luxury coach. It is equipped with individual TV screen for passenger to watch movies and listen to music. The collection of the movies and music are quite up to date too~ This is my very first time thru the Second Causeway. Exceptionally new and quiet. It is about 10 hours of coach ride to Terengganu, our driver lost their way at 8 plus in the morning. But they get back on track very quickly and alighted us at Merang Jetty.

Day 2
How it works at Merang Jetty is: there are a lot of resort pick-up point, you have to check-in at the correct resort counter to collect your boarding pass to board the speed boat. Journey to Redang Island is about another 45 mins to 1 hour.

We are assembled at the Waiting Hall of Laguna Redang Island Resort for a briefing before taking a little tram to the hotel lobby. As the package includes snorkelling trips and 3 meals a day, we are issued meal coupons and we’ll pay for the rental of snorkelling masks, life jackets and a conservation fee of RM5 each person if we are visiting the Marine Park. We had the buffet lunch first before check-in. Buffet restaurant area is very spacious. However, the food isn’t really that fantastic. I would prefer them to cook their local cuisine, probably it will taste much better.

Our room consists of a toilet, a bathroom (hot and cold shower), 1 main bed, 2 smaller single beds by the TV console, a fridge, a balcony, air con and ceiling fan. No grumble for the accommodation, very well-furnished. First day in Redang is free and easy. We spend most of our time at the swimming pool sun-tanning, recreational center to loan the snorkelling equipments and photo taking at the beach. Had a late snacks at Poolside Bar, ordering their Ala Carte Fish & Chips, Spring Rolls and drinks. So so so much tasty.

Momo Tea Inn is just beside the resort and it has been converted into a souvenir shop. As night falls, all guests will gather at their own time to the buffet restaurant for dinner. This time round, both of us are quite careful with the food we take, everything in small quantity, if they are nice we will go for more then. But the soup is bagus~ There is a live band near the beach. So we ordered 2 drinks and enjoy the ambience. Lester dedicated “Because You Love Me” to me. Kekeke~ The band also sing the theme song of Redang “Lang Hua Yi Duo Duo” by Richie Ren.

Day 3
First snorkelling trip to Marine Park at 9am, we have to gather at the jetty for briefing. It was a 15 mins journey to the Marine Park and we are free on our own. If we were to swim near the divers, they will take underwater pictures for us. This snorkelling trip is the most memorable one. The water can come real deep and there are lots of species of fish and corals. However, the corals are disappointingly dead, therefore not colourful. I doubt the situation will improve any even if we pay the conservation fee. Some of the tourists had bread provided for fish feeding but we don’t. So we spend 2 full hours among the fishes before we clean up. Lester managed to spot a small little white shark. The clear sea water is surprisingly very saltish.

We had another ala carte beef and chicken burgers and soursop ice desert by the poolside. The next afternoon sprinkling’s trip is in the open sea. It was about 5 mins from our resort. Not much things to see. Dead corals and large stones. The torture part comes when we get back to the boat to wait for the rest. The stationary boat floats up and down as the current continues to hit. It is really hard not to be dizzy~

We went to recreational center to view photos taken at the Marine Park. Bought 1 of them. Pay first and collect the cd-rom later in the night. Too lazy to go down, Lester went down himself to collect the disk instead. I promise to keep awake and open the door for him upon return. In the end, I fall asleep within minutes and poor Lester had to knock on the door for 15 mins before i “regain my conscious”. Heez~

Day 4
We sign up for another snokerling trip to Marine Park. This time we manage to get 1 whole loaf of bread to feed the fish and bought underwater camera. I am actually quite disgusted with how some of the Singaporeans acted, taking more than 1 loaf of bread (which is a lot). We are kind enuff to share our loaf with some other tourists there. This time, the current seems so much stronger. We are drifted so quickly frm left to the right. And I din know Lester can swim so well. Maybe i should be going for swimming classes soon. Bleah~ He actually had another shot with life jacket and snorkelling mask off.

I actually got quite burnt on both my shoulders and my butt. However, can’t resist the beach in front of the resort. The beach is rather crowded with tourists from Star Cruise as well. But battling and swimming into the big waves are fun.

We decided to go for ala carte restaurant the last nite. The live band who sang in the beach is there. They went to individual table to sing as well. So awkward feeling, but they are indeed talented~ My classic moment is to catch Xia Ri Mo Mo Cha movie at Redang in the room.

Day 5
Check-out day~ Have to wake up early to check-out to avoid any crowd. After breakfast we loiter about to take any last minute pictures.

I was expecting the same coach with TV but not the case obviously. Heez~ Finish reading my Harry Potter, Chamber of Secrets, in the coach while Lester sleeps soundly in the bus. Sudden urge for toilet, have been drinking too much water before i board the coach. The driver told Lester the toilet is in front. The “in front” he meant was like 30 mins later. Seeing the long winding road, my bladder nearly burst~ Terrible…

General Information
» Redang is open from mid February to early October. After which they will be closed due to the monsoon. Hence, water sports are not advisable.
» Redang is situated at Terengganu. Ferry from Merang Jetty operates daily from 9.30am to 12.30pm. You need to check out timing from resort back to jetty. There may be lesser trip back.
» The resort you are staying are usually self-contained. You basically live in the resort compound: eat, drink, entertainment and recreation.
» There are no fishes outside your resort beach. But the water is definitely crystal clear. Marine Park will be the ideal location for snorkelling. However, sad to say the corals are all dead.
» All girls group for such tours will definitely receive better benefits and attentions from the divers or guides. This theory never fails.
