Bought the Apple TV (2nd Generation) from San Francisco’s Apple Store for USD$99 (after tax is USD$107.67 = SGD$136.96).

I wish they sold it in Singapore but because there is no iTunes Movies/TV Shows rental service in Singapore, I doubt it will happen anytime soon. Nevertheless, it is still not a bad media player for that price. Not forgetting that the Apple TV is powered by Apple A4 chip.

Instead of using the provided Apple remote, you can also control your Apple TV with your iPhone/iPad using the Apple Remote App.

You can stream movie from your iPhone/iPad to your Apple TV using AirPlay which I tried and it is awesome!

I just bought Real Racing 2 for iPhone for USD$0.99 as EA is having that as it’s daily deals and I tried AirPlay Mirroring to my Apple TV and it looks great!

In addition to that, you can watch YouTube & Vimeo videos and view Flickr & Photo Stream in iCloud photos on your TV.

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being.

Apple announces iPhone 4S at last night’s “Let’s Talk iPhone” event. The form factor is exactly the same as iPhone 4, the only minor difference is the antenna placement is different from the GSM models of iPhone 4. In terms of weight, iPhone 4S is 3 grams heavier than iPhone 4 while maintaining the same dimensions of 115.2mm x 58.6mm x 9.3mm.

For the first time in iPhone history, iPhone 4S will be available in 64GB. Now iPhone 4S has 3 variants of storage capacity, 16GB (USD$199), 32GB (USD$299) and 64GB (USD$399). Both black and white models for each variant will be available during launch.

The iPhone 4S will be available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK on Friday, 14th October 2011 and preorders start this Friday, 7th October 2011.

The next roll out will be on Friday, 28th October 2011 for countries like Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Singapore will get iPhone 4S on Friday, 28th October 2011, before Hong Kong (I am surprised by this). I am guessing it will be a midnight launch similar to all the previous iPhone launches. Now SingTel, quickly launch the appointment booking website already!

Here are some of the new iPhone 4S features when compared with iPhone 4:

Dual-core A5 Chip – Two cores in the A5 chip deliver up to two times more power and up to seven times faster graphics.

8 Megapixel Camera – The custom lens uses five precision elements to shape incoming light, which makes the entire image sharper. The larger f/2.4 aperture lets in more light, so photos look brighter. And the advanced hybrid infrared filter keeps out harmful IR light for more accurate and uniform colors.

1080p (30fps) Video Recording – With all-new optics, the light is always right, the color is always vivid and everything will look even better than you remember. Video stabilisation steadies shaky shots.

Supports Both GSM or CDMA Networks – iPhone 4S is the first phone to intelligently switch between two antennas to transmit and receive, so call quality is better. It also doubles the maximum HSDPA data speeds to 14.4 Mbps.

Siri – Siri on iPhone 4S lets you use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings, place phone calls, and more. Ask Siri to do things just by talking the way you talk. Siri understands what you say, knows what you mean, and even talks back.

64GB Model Now Available – Addition to 16GB and 32GB models.

Bluetooth 4.0

AirPlay Mirroring – With AirPlay Mirroring, whatever you see and do on your iPhone appears on your HDTV at the same time.

Looks like Steve Jobs health is taking a toll on him, I wish him all the best for his health. Lets not forget it is him who brought Apple back to life from the brink of bankruptcy to the most valued tech company in the world! Kudos to him!

Letter from Steve Jobs

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

Tim Cook Takes Over As CEO

CUPERTINO, California—August 24, 2011—Apple’s Board of Directors today announced that Steve Jobs has resigned as Chief Executive Officer, and the Board has named Tim Cook, previously Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, as the company’s new CEO. Jobs has been elected Chairman of the Board and Cook will join the Board, effective immediately.

“Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company,” said Art Levinson, Chairman of Genentech, on behalf of Apple’s Board. “Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration.”

“The Board has complete confidence that Tim is the right person to be our next CEO,” added Levinson. “Tim’s 13 years of service to Apple have been marked by outstanding performance, and he has demonstrated remarkable talent and sound judgment in everything he does.”

Jobs submitted his resignation to the Board today and strongly recommended that the Board implement its succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO.

As COO, Cook was previously responsible for all of the company’s worldwide sales and operations, including end-to-end management of Apple’s supply chain, sales activities, and service and support in all markets and countries. He also headed Apple’s Macintosh division and played a key role in the continued development of strategic reseller and supplier relationships, ensuring flexibility in response to an increasingly demanding marketplace.

PS: Steve Jobs has been elected as Chairman of the Board and will still remain at Apple. Tim Cook will join the Board as well.

OS X Lion
Mac OS X Lion is finally released, it cost USD$29.99 in the Mac AppStore. I was downloading this at 11MB/s (megabytes not megabits) yesterday night! If you have a slower Internet connection, Lion will be made available on a USB thumb drive through the Apple Store (Singapore) for SGD$88. Mac OS X Lion is the eighth major release of Mac OS. It has more than 250 new features such as new Multi-Touch gestures, system-wide support for full screen apps, Mission Control, Mac AppStore, Launchpad and a new re-designed Mail app.

It seems that Xcode 4.1 (AppStore link) is free (usual USD$4.99) for OS X Lion only and FaceTime is included in OS X Lion (AppStore Link) (usual USD$0.99).

MacBook Air
MacBook Air now includes the Intel Sandy Bridge Core i5/i7 processor, Thunderbolt I/O and backlit keyboard. It also seems that the white MacBook is phrased out in favor of the lowest end MacBook Air which starts at SGD$1,288. MacBook Air supports Bluetooth 4.0 with Bluetooth Low Energy.

Mac Mini
Similar with the MacBook Air, the Mac mini also receives the updated Intel Sandy Bridge Core i5/i7 processor and Thunderbolt I/O treatment and it seems that the optical drive got ditched by Mac mini. The death of CD is sooner than you think! Also Mac mini supports Bluetooth 4.0 and Bluetooth Low Energy. In the higher end Mac mini (SGD$1,088) discrete graphics (AMD Radeon HD 6630M) is being supported for the first time.

Thunderbolt Display
Looks like Apple rebranded Cinema Display to Thunderbolt Display. It now supports Thunderbolt and acts as a docking station for MacBook Pro/Air with a Thunderbolt cable and MagSafe connector. It is a 27″ monitor (16:9 – 2560px x 1440px) with LED backlight and IPS panel. It has built-in FaceTime HD camera and microphone to make video calls and ambient light sensor to adjusts your screen brightness accordingly. It is going for SGD$1,348!

Apple’s iMac has been refreshed, bumping up the processor to Sandy Bridge while the unibody design remains the same. The last refresh happened in October 2010 where it got bumped to Core i3, i5 or i7 CPUs.

Here is what’s new in a nutshell:

Sandy Bridge Quad-core Intel Core i5 and i7 processors across the line.

Thunderbolt technology for high-performance peripherals with data transfer rates up to 20x faster than USB 2.0 and up to 12x faster than FireWire 800.

FaceTime HD camera, previously known as iSight

New AMD Radeon HD graphics processor with performance up to 3x faster than before

21.5-inch: 2.5GHz – SGD$1,648

Intel Core i5 2.5GHz Quad-Core

4GB (two 2GB) memory

500GB hard drive

AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 512MB

1920 x 1080 resolution

21.5-inch: 2.7GHz – SGD$2,048

Intel Core i5 2.7GHz Quad-Core

4GB (two 2GB) memory

1TB hard drive

AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512MB

1920 x 1080 resolution

27-inch: 2.7GHz – SGD$2,348

Intel Core i5 2.7GHz Quad-Core

4GB (two 2GB) memory

1TB hard drive

AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512MB

2560 x 1440 resolution

27-inch: 3.1GHz – SGD$2,748

Intel Core i5 3.1GHz Quad-Core

4GB (two 2GB) memory

1TB hard drive

AMD Radeon HD 6970M with 1GB

2560 x 1440 resolution

I thought this would be the iMac I will be getting, but wasn’t impressed with the change and pricing. So I guess I will wait for the “proper” refresh as in change of design and USB3.0! Anyway just for fun, here is my ideal iMac specifications based on the current generation:

27-inch – SGD$3,702.60

Intel Core i7 3.4GHz Quad-Core

8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM – 2x4GB

1TB Serial ATA Drive

AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5

Magic Trackpad

Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (Int’l English) & User’s Guide (English)

AppleCare Protection Plan for iMac- Auto-enroll

I wanted the “1TB Serial ATA Drive + 256GB Solid State Drive” but it is way too expensive (SGD$813.20 more). Not a fan of Magic Mouse, I will probably end up using a Razer Mouse instead and hence I opted for the Magic Trackpad. I am also not a fan of Wireless keyboard so I opted for the wired keyboard. AppleCare is a must for all Apple computers because the parts and labor are way too expensive.

Got my iPad 2 32GB iPad 2 WiFi + 3G thanks to my friend/neighbour who went to queue up at 6am at Infinite at VivoCity and on the way got it for me! If you are reading this, Thanks Pei Jun!

Similar to iPad 1 launch, 1 person is entitled to buy 2 iPad 2 only. The stocks are extremely limited especially white! My friend was 5th in the queue and the white 32GB iPad 2 WiFi + 3G was already sold out. So I am guessing the previous 4 person got like 2x white each.

Damage:

32GB iPad 2 WiFi + 3G – SGD$978

Orange Polyurethane iPad Smart Cover – SGD$54

Digital AV Adapter – SGD$54

Total: SGD$1,086

And now the whole of Singapore’s iPad 2s is sold out. Online shipping time is still maintained at 1-2 weeks.

Apple announces iPad 2 at yesterday iPad event. I was too tired to catch the event live via live blogging, so I only checked it this morning. It seems that most if not all the rumors are true, Facetime, dual camera, Photobooth, Dual Core A5 and available in white.

The hardware difference between iPad 2 and iPad is the upgrade to dual-core Apple A5, back and front camera, three-axis gyro and of course the support for CDMA network. In terms of physical design, it is about 100 grams lighter but 50% thinner. iPad 2 is now available in white as well, looks like they solve the problem of painting in white. iPad 2 prices is the same as the iPad, Apple did not make it cheaper this time.

iOS 4.3 will come bundled with iPad 2 and for the rest of us, iOS 4.3 will be available for our iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches on 11th March 2011. You need to install iTunes 10.2 in order to upgrade to iOS 4.3 which is available right now.

Bought the Magic Trackpad at iStudio located at Changi Airport Terminal 3 on Friday before I left for Jakarta, Indonesia. On the same day, Apple Singapore is having a Chinese New Year Sale. As there are no 7% tax at the airport, it amounts to about the same price as the CNY sale. Got it for SGD$91.59. In fact, if you are getting more expensive items like MacBook Pro or Air, it is even cheaper at the airport than during the CNY sale.
