Apple iOS 4.0 Out

Slow for a few hours but Apple finally releases iOS 4.0 to the general public at about 1am (GMT +8). Heard that it is exactly the same as the GM build release during WWDC 2010.

Apple Refreshes iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano, iPod Classic

iPod Shuffle
3 new colors has been added to the iPod Shuffle namely the pink, green and blue. There is also a special edition polished stainless steel available only in the Apple Online Store. The iPod shuffle voice now tells you when your battery is full. 3rd party headphones with the Shuffle remote control is a go!

2GB is going for SGD$88.00, 4GB is going for SGD$118 and the special edition polished stainless steel iPod Shuffle is going for SGD$148 (4GB only).

iPod Nano
The biggest change of all. Now iPod Nano has a built-in video camera, FM Radio and pedometer. It also sports a larger 2.2″ display together with microphone and speaker. Voice over is now supported as well. 8GB is going for SGD$228 and the 16GB is going for SGD$288.

iPod Classic
The iPod Classic capacity has been bumped from 120GB to 160GB while staying at the same price SGD$388.

iPod Touch
The 8GB iPod Touch has been dropped to SGD$308. 16GB has been phrase out in favor of a 32GB is for SGD$468 and 64GB for SGD$628. The new 32 and 64GB version has a faster processor, 50% faster. Just like the iPhone 3GS.

Apple announces iPhone OS 3.0, the iPhone OS that was supposed to be in iPhone in the first place.

I think lots of paid jailbreak apps like SwirlyMMS and biteSMS might have to developed new apps. Say good bye to SwirlyMMS, biteSMS and QuickGold!

The iPhone OS 3.0 update will be available for free for iPhone and iPhone 3G users. MMS and Stereo Bluetooth will not be available for iPhone users due to hardware differences. For iPod Touch and iPod Touch 2nd Generation users, you will have to fork out USD$9.95 for it.

Configuring iPhone/iPod Touch WLAN For NUS Wireless

Here is a tutorial on how to configure your iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch or iPod Touch (2nd Gen) to connect to NUS Wireless network. We will be using NUS WLAN SSID “NUS” instead of “NUSOPEN”, as “NUS” is protected by PEAP and it is much faster.

*UPDATE 2* There is a bug in iOS4 which cause .mobileconfig files not recognized by Safari. For more details, read here. To overcome this issue:

Using your computer, go to http://lesterchan.net/nus/iphone/
Key in your NUSNET UserID and click Generate
Your browser should prompt you to download the NUS.mobileconfig file
Once you have downloaded the file, email the file to yourself
Using Mail.app in your iOS, open up the the email which contains the NUS.mobileconfig attachement
You should now be able to install the NUS.mobileconfig profile

*UPDATE* It is now working with iOS 3.0.

Instructions

Launch Safari in your iPhone/iPod Touch
Go to http://lesterchan.net/nus/iphone/
Under Your NUSNET ID, key in your NUSNET UserID (EXCLUDING the domain (NUSSTU, NUSSTF or GUEST) portion)
Click Generate
A Install Profile screen will appear
Click Install
A Install Profile Warning Popup will appear
Ignore the warning and click Install Now
A Enter Password screen will appear
Key in your NUSNET Password
Click Next
A Profile Installed screen will appear
Click Done
Go back to your Home Screen
Go to Settings -> Wi-Fi
Under Wi-Fi, select ON
Under Choose a Network…, select NUS
Wait a while, while it trys to connects
A Certificate screen will appear
Click Accept
You are now connected to NUS WLAN SSID

Notes

At Step 18, you may need to re-try Step 14 to 17 if it takes more than 1 minute to connect.
At Step 20, you may need to re-try Step 14 to 20 if nothing happens when you click Accept.

Privacy

The generator DOES NOT save your NUSNET UserID on this server.
At Step 10, when asked to key in your password, it is iPhone authenticating with NUS and NOT with this server.
In short, you can rest assured that NONE of your information is saved on this server.

iPod Nano (4th Generation)

This is the 4th generation iPod Nano which goes back to the good old days of the tall iPod Nano. Spend more than 10 hours to modify lesterchan.net layout to make it iPhone/iPod Touch viewable. At the moment, you can only view blog post and not pages. I have no plans to make the pages iPhone/iPod Touch viewable yet as it is a lot of work and I don’t find it necessary.

Just point your iPhone or iPod Touch to lesterchan.net and it will detect your user agent and serve you the iPhone/iPod Touch layout if you are using either of the devices.

iPhone Firmware 2.0

It is Friday, 11th July 2008 in Singapore (GMT+8). The iPhone 3G has been released in New Zealand as well as Australia and more countries are coming up next due to different time zone.

While in Singapore, there are rumors that the iPhone 3G will be released later instead of in September 2008. I highly doubt this rumor is true. If you read the whole thread, there is also another rumor saying that iPhone 3G will be released on 11th August 2008, exactly 1 month after the iPhone 3G is released in the US.

There is now an iTunes store in Singapore but there are only apps for you to purchase, no music or videos are seen in the store. You can choose Singapore under “My Country” which is located right at the bottom of the iTunes Store page. I have just created my iTunes Singapore account, you need a credit card and a Singapore address.

Now I am waiting for the iPod Touch Firmware 2.0 which I have to pay USD$9.90 for it. Apple seriously always screws early adopters and a perfect example of it is those iPod Touch users who paid USD$19.90 for the January 2008 App Pack and now they will have to pay USD$9.90 for the 2.0 firmware. And to make matter worst, the January 2008 App Pack is included in the firmware 2.0.

iPod New Lineup

Apple has announced a new branch of iPod, called iPod Touch. Updated iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano and the iPod 5th generation is now called iPod Classic.

iPod Touch
Imagine iPhone without the calling function and it is only 8mm thick and you will have the iPod Touch. It come pack with either a 8GB or a 16GB flash drive. The rest of the functions are pretty much the same as iPhone not forgetting it has Wifi too.

8GB will cost you SGD$498 and 16GB will cost you SGD$698.

iPod Classic
Touted as the 6th generation iPod, it now comes in 80GB or 160GB, sports an enhanced UI which supports cover flow and it comes enclosed in a new metal shell with silver or black color.

iPod Nano
The 3rd generation iPod Nano just got fatter because it now has the ability to playback video and has a screen resolution of 320px by 240px. It comes with pack with either a 4GB or 8GB flash drive. Apple has ditched the 2GB edition. Only silver color is available for the 4GB edition while the 8GB edition has all the colors. And it also feature an enhanced UI which includes cover flow.

4GB will cost you SGD$248 and 8GB will cost you SGD$348.
