It is a yearly gathering of mig33 users in Indonesia. Kopnas is derived from the word “Kopi” (Coffee) and “Nasional” (National) which means a gathering for coffee.

The event starts at 9am till 8pm and is held at Plaza Barat Senayan, Jakarta, Indonesia.

mig33′s miniblog

We also officially launched our mig33 miniblog service on that day. For more information about miniblog, check out the coverage by VentureBeat: mig33 launches Twitter-like Miniblog for emerging mobile markets. I have been working on the miniblog for than 6 months together with my colleagues and to see it goes live and being used by 300,000 daily active users really gives you a sense of satisfaction. It is the same feeling that I got when I created my WordPress plugins and seen it being used in so many websites and having a total download count of 6.3 million!

Feel free to sign up for a mig33 account and follow me on my miniblog at b.mig33.com/u/lesterchan!

mig33 Kopnas 2012 – Merchandises
I have been to some smaller mig33 users gathering before but this is my first time attending a mig33 event of this scale and size.

Despite the event starting at 9am, the crowd only started coming in around 1pm.

I did not know how much the mig33 users are fanatic about mig33 till this event. 90% of the users come to the event wearing their own mig33 community t-shirts, some brought alone their banners as well. We have booths allocated to different mig33 communities as well as mig33 users selling mig33 merchandises (some are even handmade) featuring our famous migBots!

migBots

We do not just do coding, but also reading up on new technology trends and how we can deploy them to production so that they bring benefits to the company. For the past year, I learn stuff like Hadoop, Redis, Memcached, RabbitMQ and on top of that scaling the LAMP stack and making them as efficient as possible is what we do as well.

I have picked up log tailing from my colleagues, analyzing server logs and looking at Cacti graphs. With these, you can identify patterns that leads to exploits and even attacks and how to counter them and effectively preventing it from happening again.

I am with the web team but I have also worked on our Android Client (web pages and native UI) which the first version was released in December 2010.

To mark my first year at mig33 (yea right!), we are releasing the first beta of our next client, mig33 v4.5, which contains new features (Fashion Show, new Gift and Group Chat Room commands) and significant speed optimizations over the previous version (mig33 v4.2).

Also in today release, is our new Facebook App to support Facebook Chat’s XMPP protocol using Facebook Authentication. But eventually more features will be added to this Facebook App =)

After working for a year, I think that if even if you excel with your studies in school, chances are you might not be able to do that with your job. Not every job looks at what grades you got in school or what CCA you attended. It is that extra skill sets or part time job (related to your job) that you have obtained outside your school curriculum that gives you the competitive advantage against your fellow peers when it comes to looking for a job. But of course luck do play a major role in job seeking and interview.

I would not say what I learned in school is totally useless here. Stuff like Java/J2EE, SDLC, Data Structures/Algorithms and Networking are still useful for me. Personally, I think those skills that I picked up on my own because of my interests helps me a lot and it gives me a good head start. Skills like LAMP, JS/AJAX/jQuery, SVN, WordPress (mig33 uses WordPress as well) and even Facebook/Twitter integration.

I am known for my WordPress plugins and if I am with mig33 earlier (before they have WordPress installed), I would have proposed a WordPress strategy or rather I would call it “Proper Usage of WordPress” guide for the company that covers the usage of Posts/Pages/Categories/Plugins/Themes in WordPress to the technical part of WordPress like scaling and security.

Well that basically sums up my 1 year at mig33.

We are still hiring and if you are interested in joining us, do check out our Jobs Page. Currently we have opening for these positions (Send your resume to jobs@mig33global.com):

I have spent the first quarter of my life studying! 6 years in primary school, 4 years in secondary school, 3 years in Singapore Polytechnic (SP), 2 years and 2 months serving my nation, 3 years 6 months in National University of Singapore (NUS). Finally, it is time for me to step out to the working world and complete the other half of my life.

My last paper ended back on 3rd December 2009, went to Taiwan for my graduate trip from 7th to 13th December 2009 and went to Hong Kong with Li Xiang from 19th to 27th December 2009. Sent out my resumes to OCBC, UOB, SingTel, Matador, CSIT and Crimson Logic for the last 3 months but did not get a reply.

I was recommended by David to Andy who said his company, mig33 Pte Ltd, is looking for a web developer and David asked me to contact Andy personally. So I thought why not give it a try, so I sent my resume to Andy and Andy forwarded it to his bosses. Thanks to Andy for endorsing and putting good words for me, I manage to get an interview last Thursday, 28th January 2010 at 3pm. The interview was pretty technical which I like because it really tests your skills and experience in that area rather than just looking at your CAP or grades and judge everything based on that.

Came back at 4pm and at 5.49pm, I got an email saying that I got the job as a Web Engineer at mig33! I was really over the moon! It is my first full-time job! The feeling is definitely better than striking 4D or ToTo!

It is such a coincidence that mig33 is located at The Central Office 1 building which is just beside my internship company, Sedgwick Richardson, which is located in Office 2 building (they both share the same lobby)

mig33 is the largest mobile chat community, connecting millions of mobile friends all around the world! You can find out more about mig33 at http://mig33.com/.

On the day that I got the job, I posted a blog post entitled All Good Things Must Come To An End on my WordPress blog.

Just in case you miss it, let me paste it down here:

As you all know, I have been doing WordPress plugins and supporting it for the past 6 years. These 6 years of my life, I have been through my polytechnic education, my national service as well as my university education.

I just graduated from university in December 2009 and have been jobless for 2 months. However, things change for the better. I was offered a full-time job and will be starting work this coming Monday on the 1st February 2010.

I regret to say that I am not able to provide support for my plugins anymore due to my full-time job commitment. I will leave my WordPress plugins support forums open and let the community help one another.

However, I will still update my plugins when I can and you still can report bugs to me via email and I will try to fix it.

The comments I have gotten are very positive and I would like to thank everyone for their support and encouragement! You rock WordPress community!
