What’s New In Android 4.0

Beauty and simplicity
With Ice Cream Sandwich, our mission was to build a mobile OS that works on both phones and tablets, and to make the power of Android enticing and intuitive. We created a new font that’s optimized for HD displays and eliminated all hardware buttons in favor of adaptable software buttons. We also dramatically improved the keyboard, made notifications more interactive and created resizable widgets.

The desktop-class browser is significantly faster, featuring a refined tab manager and the ability to sync your bookmarks with Google Chrome. Ice Cream Sandwich also features the best mobile Gmail experience to date, with a new design that lets you quickly swipe through your inbox and search messages even when you’re offline. Calendar boasts a clean new look and you can zoom into your schedule with a pinch.

Connect and share
People are at the heart of Ice Cream Sandwich. We rethought how you browse your contacts with the new People app, which combines high-resolution photos and updates from Google+ and other social services. It’s also easier to capture and share your life with family and friends. Galaxy Nexus sports a high-end camera with zero shutter lag, automatic focus, top notch low-light performance and a simple way to capture panoramic pictures. Shoot amazing photos or 1080p video, and then edit and share them directly from your phone.

Beyond smart
Galaxy Nexus isn’t just a smartphone—it’s beyond smart. Ice Cream Sandwich gives you complete control over the amount of mobile data you use by helping you better understand and manage it. We’re also introducing Android Beam, which uses near field communication (NFC) to instantly share webpages, YouTube videos, maps, directions and apps by simply tapping two phones together. Face Unlock uses state-of-the-art facial recognition technology to unlock your phone with nothing more than a smile.

Windows Phone 7.5 has more than 500 new features and enhancements to deliver smarter and easier communications, apps and Internet experiences to connected individuals today.

The new Windows Phone 7.5 will be available in Singapore in the coming weeks on HTC Radar and Samsung OMNIA W. These phones will be available at telecom operators and mobile retail outlets.

The Mango release is available for free to all Windows Phone 7 customers. Additional details on the status of updates for Windows Phone customers are available on the “Where’s my phone update?” page. Microsoft will begin delivery of the update to existing Windows Phone 7 users from today and gradually ramp up delivery so that the update will be broadly available to most existing customers by the end of October.

The latest version of Windows Phone will feature major improvements and new features centering on the idea of “connecting with people”. Mr John Fernandes, Director, Marketing & Operations, Microsoft Singapore, explained: “When Windows Phone 7 was announced last year, it caught the attention of many who wanted a refreshing smartphone experience. Today, we are happy to announce an update that will enable users to truly embrace the idea of simple connectivity to the people they care about most. This upgrade is an important milestone and one that demonstrates our commitment to the mobile space.”

Mr Melvin Chua, Country Manager of HTC Singapore, said: “With Windows 7.5, Microsoft has truly upped the ante in providing refreshing mobile experiences to the always-connected individual. The HTC Radar brings you closer to life with stylish design, a great camera, and intuitive new ways to share and connect.”

Mr Winston Goh, Product Marketing Manager – Telecommunications, Samsung Asia, said: “With our multi-platform strategy, Samsung is committed to providing a diverse line-up of products for the market. This year, we have continued our partnership with Microsoft to launch the Windows Phone 7.5 Samsung OMNIA W, which has been developed to enhance the ‘People First’ experience that Windows Phone offers. Featuring an elegant design, a vivid 3.7″ Super AMOLED display as well as an enriched content and social communication experience, the 1.4GHz powered Samsung OMNIA W delivers an exceptional Windows Phone experience for discerning and connected individuals.”

Put People First: Delivering a connected experience for smartphone users
Understanding that users prefer to stay connected, the Windows Phone is a modern communication tool with essential social networking features built in. Through the unique People feature, users can now be more connected to friends, family and loved ones with a one touch access to Windows Live, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Another new feature is Groups, where users could group their favorites, and pin them to the Start screen in order to get live updates, as well as text, email and IM them all at once. Facebook chat, Messenger, check-ins and photo tagging are also now built into Windows Phone 7.5 to provide users with a more connected experience. On new Windows Phone devices, users will be able to easily connect up to five Wifi-enabled devices to the web using Windows Phone data connection1.

Windows Phone takes the Internet beyond the browser with the inclusion of Internet Explorer 9 in the new update along with hardware acceleration.

Apps are key to a smartphone experience, and Windows Phone 7.5 takes the user experience a step further. Apps pinned to the Start screen will be able to showcase live updates and allow users to be updated on the latest with just a glance. The search function is also connected to apps to make searches easier to discover and use.

Windows Phone 7.5 will also feature SkyDrive, a cloud-based storage for Windows Live users to upload, share and edit Microsoft Office documents and files, photos and videos, allowing for true mobility in collaboration.

Enhancements for Windows Phone enterprise users
Microsoft understands that the mobile phone is used more than just a social connectivity and entertainment device. Windows Phone 7.5 features a number of exciting new productivity capabilities and features for serious work and collaboration on-the-go.

With cloud being pervasive in the current enterprise environment, Microsoft has developed new features for Outlook Mobile and Office Mobile for business users which will strengthen an already powerful set of capabilities. These new features include Microsoft Lync, which will be available on this new version for better unified communication among users. Additionally, users will welcome enhancements and improvements that will make for an easier, yet dynamic experience, including the ability to pin Outlook folders on Start screen, “Server search” capabilities for email searches, as well as built-in Office 365 auto discovery and auto provisioning capabilities for local subscribers to the cloud-based service.

Security is a key concern for many enterprise users, and Microsoft has built the Windows Phone from ground up with security in mind. The new Windows Phone 7.5 addresses the top needs of IT departments by providing an Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) certified phone, delivering a seamless email and productivity experience with capabilities to apply corporate management and security policies. Some of these new security features include support for Information Rights Management (IRM), Malware-protected Explorer 9 Mobile, and secure data transmission through SSL Encryption 128/256 Bit.

Windows Phone Marketplace: One of the world’s fastest growing mobile app platforms
The new Windows Phone update is Microsoft’s commitment to the mobile market by delivering an experience which puts people first. This is only made possible with a vibrant ecosystem through an active app developer environment and strategic partnerships. Microsoft Singapore has, in the last year, worked with app developers as well as schools to develop Windows Phone apps for the local market.

“We have over 30,000 apps in less than a year since we launched Marketplace, making Windows Phone as one of the fastest growing mobile app marketplaces. This is an endorsement of Microsoft’s continued support of the developer communities globally, as well as the proven Windows Phone developer platform. In Singapore, there are more than 750 apps developed locally since the launch of Windows Phone 7. We expect this growth momentum of Marketplace to be stronger with the launch of Windows Phone 7.5,” added Mr Fernandes.

Some of these local apps include:

Around You, by Chris Ismael: This Metro-style app shows user directions to Foursquare-registered establishments in the user’s vicinity using the Windows Phone 7 platform’s location-based services. This app is built using some of Windows Phone 7.5’s new features such as fast application switching.

Shootout Defence, by Kazer Wong: A simple tower defence game developed by a member of Microsoft Student Partner.

BusGuide WP7, by Muhammad Mulyadi bin Sazali: Optimised for Windows Phone 7.5, this application allows users to get bus arrival timing of SBS and SMRT buses, as well as bus routes information.

My 2nd hoot from SITEX 2010 is the A.C. Ryan Playon! It comes with a 2TB Samsung harddisk (Spinpoint F4EG) and free Wireless N Dongle. The reason I chose A.C. Ryan instead of other brands is because it can play almost all formats including RM & RMVB. I know Western Digital Live TV can’t play those formats.

The A.C. Ryan Playon! HD also supports NAS functionality and hence I will be off loading all my media stuffs into it from my NAS.

In terms of UI, it is simple and easy to use but I think the graphics element within the UI can be improved to make it more visually appealing.

The only complain I have so far with the Playon HD is the network only supports 10/100Mbps which makes transferring files to it extremely slow. The speed I am getting for transferring files to Playon HD is only 5MB/s. I may switch to using the free Wireless N Dongle that comes with the Playon HD, at least it supports up to 300Mbps which is 3x faster than the wired option.

Introduction
“The Samsung LD190G wide screen monitors deliver enhanced productivity and expanded entertainment. Designed to fit perfectly with Laptop PCs, they offer USB access to multi-tasking on the move.”

Samsung sent me the Samsung Lapfit LD190G for review. Thank you Daniel =D

Box

There are currently 2 models/sizes available, the LD190G (RRP: SGD$239) and LD220G (RRP: SGD$339). The sizes are 18.5″ wide and 21.5″ wide respectively. For the LD220G model you are able to connect to multiple Lapfit monitors or any USB devices through the 2 extra USB ports at the back. You can connect up to a maximum of 4 monitors at a same time with a serial USB connection and 6 monitors with a parallel USB connection.

In the user manual provided, they recommend using USB cable to connect to the monitor if you need more than 1 display or multiple monitors in Plug & Play mode. On the other hand, they recommend using the VGA (D-SUB) cable if you are using a single display, playing 3D games or watching HD videos.

Weight Product Weight: 3.6kg

Stand Function: Tilt

Package Contents
The contents in the package is pretty straightforward as shown in the picture.

Package Contents

1x Samsung Lapfit LD190G

1x USB Cable

1x D-SUB Cable

1x Power Cord

1x Cleaning Cloth

1x Installation/Driver CD

1x Quick Setup Guide

1x User’s Guide

Features
According to the official website, it states that the Lapfit monitor uses 33% less energy than conventional monitors and hence as stated in the specification, it uses between 20W to 22W of power. The convention monitor stand and base is missing from the Lapfit. Instead it uses a Photo Frame-like stand attached at the back of the monitor in order to match the height of a laptop to provide a harmonious dual display and that explains why the Lapfit may look lower than the usual conventional monitor. The Lapfit is able to provide tilting of 10° to 40° degree to match the viewing angle of the laptop screen.

Lapfit Matches The Height Of The Laptop

My Thoughts
The monitor is finished in Piano Black and it is very glossy and hence no matter how I take the photo, it will always have a reflection of my hand holding the camera.

Front View

Back View

The monitor is slim and light weighing at 3.6kg and it is very easy to carry around as there is a groove at the top (where the ventilation holes are) for you to grip it as shown in the back view picture above.

Photo Frame-like Stand

The Photo Frame-like stand attached at the back of the monitor can be pulled till you hear a clicking sound (the 10° to 40° degree tilting comes after the clicking sound) and that will make you monitor stable when you place it on the table. At first I dare not pull it out too much as I afraid that it might break, and hence when I place it on the table, slight movement on the table, will cause the monitor to topple and I find it weird. I did not find anything that says about the clicking sound in the user guide, so I assumed that the user guide assumed that its consumers know about it.

Photo Frame-like Stand Rollers

There are 2 rollers which is attached to the end of the stand and that allows you to tilt the monitor easily without the need of hearing the screeching sound.

Rubber

There are also 2 rubber pieces attached at the bottom of the panel to ensure that it does not move easily.

3 Ports Only

There are only 3 ports at the back of the monitor for the LD190G model, 1 for the USB connection, 1 for the D-SUB connection and the last one is for the Power Cord.

Touch Sensitive Buttons

The buttons (including the power button) of the monitor are touch sensitive, only if you touch around the power button then the menu buttons will appear.

Using With Windows Laptop
The current latest drivers for Windows is v4.6.

Windows 7 Device

I am using Windows 7 RC1 on my laptop and apparently the driver does not work with Windows 7 yet. When I first plug the USB cable into my laptop, Windows 7 manage to detect it as Samsung UbiSync Monitor without the need to install the CD at all. But because nothing appears on my screen after that, I tried installing the drivers from Samsung Website and when i run the setup.exe, it states that my Windows is not compatible. I tried running it in backward compatibility mode as Windows Vista SP2, it still does not work. hopefully this issue will get fixed as soon as possible.

Dual Display

Single Display

Luckily there is still the VGA cable to fall back on, the moment I plug in the VGA cable and viola, it displays perfectly. Note that my laptop has a native resolution of 1024×768 (old laptop) and hence when I extend the monitor onto the Lapfit, it has the black area on the side because the aspect ratio is 4:3. Samsung called it the intelligent Image Size function which maintains 4:3 integrity on a wide screen and effectively eliminates image distortion and stretching.

Single Display

I tried it on my brother’s laptop which is running Windows XP SP3. Similar to Windows 7, Windows XP detect it as Samsung UbiSync Monitor without the need to install the CD. However to play safe, I downloaded the drivers from Samsung website again, and after running setup.exe, viola, my desktop extended to my Lapfit monitor.

Note that your Lapfit monitor is defaulted to Extended Monitor after you install the driver.

Using With MacBook/MacBook Pro
If you are using a Mac, you need to download the drivers manually from the Samsung Lapfit LD190G as it is not included in the CD. Do note that the file will be in rar and hence you may need WinRAR in a Windows machine to extract the DMG file.

MacBook Pro With LD190G

Once you installed driver, you will need to restart your Mac. After that just go to System Preferences -> Display and click on the Detect button and viola!

Limitations

Because the USB monitor is recognized as a USB device, the DOS screen that appears for general monitors when a PC is booting up may not get displayed.
In this case, you will need to connect the monitor using the VGA cable instead of the USB cable.

USB monitor is not compatible to any software that requires 3D hardware acceleration. Such software includes most 3D games as well as programs based on DirectX.

Because of the lack of a base and a proper stand, it might not be feasible to use it as your desktop monitor.

Conclusion
The monitor is not really a true plug and play monitor as it still requires you to install the driver on both PC and Mac (you just need to do it once). The software does make configuration the Lapfit much easier like whether to extend the monitor to the Lapfit or use it as the main monitor, etc. However, the thing I like about this monitor is that it is catered specially for laptops because it is designed in such a way that it almost the same height as your laptop screen when you place it side by side. Without the conventional monitor base/stand, it makes the Lapfit monitor very compact and does not occupy much space on your table. For those who are considering getting a monitor specially for your laptop, you might want to consider the Lapfit. The recommended retail price (RRP) for the LD190G is SGD$239, which is quite reasonable.

If there is a monitor bag specially designed for it, I think this would make carrying it around easier and Samsung can market it as a portable monitor for laptops.

Hopefully the driver issues for Windows 7 will be ironed out before Windows 7 is launched on the 22nd October 2009.

Woke up at 10am today, left my house at 10.30am to Suntec City with my brother for the IT Show 2009. I decided to park at Marina Square instead of Suntec City to avoid jam at the carpark. Reach Marina Square before 11am, and still manage to eat McDonalds Breakfast.

After breakfast, immediately went to wait outside level 6 of the Suntec exhibition center. While waiting, there is this lady from MediaCorp Radio approaches us for interview. She talked to me in English first and then ask me whether I can do a Mandarin interview, I agreed since I got nothing to do. She ask some questions like what are you buying at the IT Show, how often you come to this type of fair and how much savings you can save. I am so handicapped in Mandarin. I have no idea how to translate laser, router, switch, wirless USB adapter to Mandarin!

Exactly at 12pm, the doors are opened and the security personnel got Zerg rushed! Went to the Ban Leong booth first as my brother wanted to take a look at Razor mouse as his is dying soon. As usual the promotion for Razer is nothing fantastic, I think you can get even cheaper outside for certain Razor products (eg: Lycosa Keyboard).

Went to the D-Link booth and asked if I buy above SGD$500 got discount, the sales guy said only if I pay cash he can give me 2% which I thought it is definitely not a good promotion at all. If I pay by credit card, I get free gifts as well as points! UOB is having some promotion, I think if you spend above a certain amount, they will give you some things free. I am aiming on the sure-win lucky dip if you spend more than SGD$850.

Damage at D-Link Booth

D-Link DIR-855: SGD$299

D-Link DGS-1008D: SGD$100

D-Link DWA-160: SGD$119

Total: SGD$518

After getting my networking stuffs, went to level 4 to Samsung booth to get my multifunction color laser printer. Saw Kelvin from Fuwell and Daniel’s Samsung colleague which I met at BlogOut! 2009. Fuwell is selling Samsung LCD Monitors whereas Harvey Norman is selling the Samsung printers. Samsung printers come with trolley but pushing the trolley though the crowd is no easy task! The printer box is quite bulky whereas the printer is quite small itself. The price for the CLX-3175N is still the same but this time instead of giving Abalone (during Chinese New Year promotion), they are giving a free black toner and you are entitled to buy additional toners at 20% off. Pretty good steal I would say.

Wanted to pay by UOB for my printer and toner but it got rejected! My mom literally max out every credit card when she is in Japan as well as for the down payment of the BMW. So end up paying with HSBC and there goes my sure-win lucky dip. Instead I got a SGD$5 Starbucks voucher for spending above SGD$350 for my UOB card. I kinda like the lucky draw form in IT Show 2009, every SGD$100 spend entitled you for one lucky draw form. I don’t really make an effort to get the lucky draw forms normally so I maybe a bit noob in this area. The lucky draw is carbonized, so you just have to write on 1 and it will be carbon copied to 4 other copies! Also the forms are short and sweet, just fill in your name, NRIC and contact number!

Damage at Samsung Booth

Samsung CLX-3175N: SGD$698

Samsung CLT-P409C: SGD$184 (Toner Value Pack)

Total: SGD$882

After buying all the stuffs that I set out to buy, we went home to put the stuff before my brother send me to school for my Statistics tutorial at 3pm to 4pm.

D-Link Networking Products + Samsung 3-in-1 Multifunction Color Laser Printer And Toner

After my tutorial, went to the IT Show again with Kelvin and Hong Jun. Kelvin went there and got a ViewSonic 24″ monitor with built-in speakers and he helped his girlfriend to get an iPod Nano (Black). Saw Rayman : Raving Rabbids for Xbox 360 at the PlayCraft booth and I immediately bought it! Finally there is a “family” game on my Xbox 360 besides Bomberman to play with Li Xiang. I wished that Raving Rabbids 2 will also be out on Xbox 360, but I think that will not be the case.

Rayman : Raving Rabbids For Xbox 360

Damage at Playcraft Booth

Rayman : Raving Rabbids (Xbox 360): SGD$49.90

Total: SGD$49.90

Saw from Hardware Zone that the Ovation booth are selling Western Digital internal harddisk, so went there to get 1TB Western Digital Green Power for Li Xiang, but it is out of stock and the stock will be coming in at about 7pm.

Instead of waiting there till 7pm, the three of us when for dinner at Marina Square food court. Hong Jun, my family and I Just love the curry noodle there! Met up with my secondary school friends there as well. When they came, Hong Jun and Kelvin went home.

After dinner, I went to the IT Show the third time within the same day and immediately went to buy Li Xiang harddisk. This time it is so crowded that I could not even make a call out when I am in the hall! It seems that the base station has been overloaded either that of my iPhone 3G sucked.

Li Xiang’s Damage at Ovation Booth

Western Digital Green Power (1TB): SGD$165

Total: SGD$165

I injected SGD$1,449.90, Li Xiang injected SGD$165 and Kelvin injected about SGD$600+ into Singapore’s economy!

This is the first time I was invited to a Samsung event, was invited by Daniel, the PR Manager for Samsung. Previously I did two reviews on Samsung products, one is the YP-K3 and the other is a VP-MX10. This event is called Samsung Touch Event. It is to let us have a touch and feel of those Samsung phones that are announced during MWC. The product marketing (mobile) manager, Winston said there about about 20+ phones Samsung phones that is being announced at MWC, but here in Singapore, they picked 7 to showcase to us.

The 7 phones are C3050, UltraB, UltraS, BeatDisc, BeatDJ, OmniaHD and the last phone which is the flagship product is the UltraTouch. They also announced 2 services, Share Pix and Online Widgets. The Share Pix is similar to Nokia’s Share On Ovi but in this case, the pictures are first uploaded to Samsung servers and then in turn the server will upload the pictures to the designated service that the user choose like Facebook or Friendster. The online widget is just an improved version of the famous Samsung Widgets that can be found in some Samsung phones. The online widget will allow you to retrieve RSS feeds as welll as create shortcut to websites.

More Information About The Phones

Samsung C3050

Samsung UltraB

Samsung UltraS

Samsung BeatDisc

Samsung BeatDJ

Samsung OmniaHD

Samsung UltraTouch

Winston also briefly mention about Samsung Blue Earth. The phone is made up of materials from recycled plastic extracted from water bottles. There is also a Solar Panel on the back of the phone which charges the phone. Accordingly to Daniel, you need to put the phone for 14 hours under the light or sun in order to use it to talk for 4 hours. I wonder will the phone battery melts first before that happens.

Samsung will be launching phones on the Android as well as on Windows Mobile 6.5 sometime soon as well. The Samsung OmniaHD and Samsung UltraTouch will be out in Q2 2009.

Samsung Touch Event Gallery
I wanted to upload the pictures to Nokia’s Share on Ovi, but it feels weird. I wanted to upload to my own gallery but I am too lazy to resize the pictures. End up, I decided to upload to Facebook! I hate the stupid Facebook limit of 60 photos per album!

Went to Sitex 2008 yesterday with Julian, Kelvin and Weiquan. Surprising it was not very crowded. Now I am starting to dislike exhibitions at Sitex because it is so far! This year Sitex is quite a disappointment, Ban Leong did not take part and hence no Razer products. After walking Hall 5 and 6 of Singapore Expo, it makes me feel that this exhibition is selling TV instead of computer! The prices for some of the stuffs are not that cheap at all. I got my D-Link DNS-323 at SGD$199 from Comex 2008 back in August 2008 but now they are selling at SGD$209? Prices should drop and not increase!

I think the most value for money are the memory cards, thumbdrives and portable hardisk. Kelvin and I got the SanDisk Ultra II (Class 4) 8GB SDHC for just SGD$33. Julian got the SanDisk Cruzer Micro Skin 4GB Thumbdrive for just SGD$12! I bought the exact same thumbdrive for SGD$19.90 at Giant Hypermarket a few months back!

I also got my brother a TravelPac Memory/SIM Card Reader for SGD$26.90.

I did not get for Li Xiang the Samsung 2233SW 22” widescreen LCD monitor because the images look squashed on the monitor perhaps due to the long width and short height and a weird resolution of 1920×1080 and an aspect ratio of 16:9 whereas widescreen monitors all have an aspect ratio of 16:10.

After Sitex 2008, we proceed on to Bugis to have lunch and then went to Sim Lim Square! Julian bought Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir for SGD$39.90, Weiquan bought the X-Mini Capsule Speakers for SGD$35 and Kelvin bought a memory card reader for SGD$12.

Judging from what we buy at Sim Lim Square, there is nothing much to buy at Sitex 2008 actually.

I am aiming for the D-Link DIR-655 wireless N router to upgrade my home network “infrastructure”, it is selling at SGD$139 during the special promotion but it is limited to the first 30 customers at 6.30pm yesterday. The usual price is SGD$229. Hopefully the next IT exhibition (IT Show 2009) on the 12th March 2009 will have better promotions for it.

Schedules for 2009 IT exhibitions:

IT Show 2009: 12th March 2009 to 15th March 2009 (Suntec City)

The PC Show 2009: 11th June 2009 to 14th June 2009 (Suntec City)

Comex 2009: 10th September 2009 to 13th September 2009 (Suntec City)

Sitex 2009: 26th November 2009 to 29th November 2009 (Singapore Expo)

My year 3, semester 1 exams are over! Yesterday was my last paper, CS4254 – IS Project Management. The paper was the most difficult paper for me in this semester and even most of my friends say so. We did the past year paper and it was much easier even though it is set by the same lecturer.

Will be heading down to SITEX 2008 later at 12pm to hoot the Samsung 2233SW 22” widescreen LCD monitor for SGD$239 for Li Xiang. That is really a good buy. It boost a resolution nearly of a 24″ widescreen monitor of 1920 x 1080, an aspect ratio of 16:9 and a 5ms response time. Click here for the full specifications.

I will be leaving to Taiwan on the 14th December 2008 and coming back on the 31st December 2008. The first 6 days 5 nights will be a tour package and after that we will extend free and easy till the 31st December 2008. The flight is by Singapore Airlines (SQ). This will be my 2nd time taking SQ, the last time I took was to KL at least 15 years ago or so.

I think after I come back from Taiwan, my mandarin will definitely be improved!

The gross capacity of the fridge is 580 litres which is much bigger than my previous Sanyo SR-37ZB refrigerator. There is no one refrigerator big enough for my mom to put all her baking stuffs and hence my house always have 2 refrigerators ever since my mom picked up baking.

This new refrigerator is kinda cool, it will display the temperature of both the freezer and the refrigerator on the door. Now if only it has WIFI capability and we can monitor it directly from our browser, not just the temperature but also the groceries within the refrigerator.

Better still, since refrigerator are never turned off and it is very cool inside (Freezer: -19°C, Refrigerator: 2°C), it maybe a good thing to have a built in web server within it.

Dad’s Off To Vietnam4
My dad’s flight is 10am on Singapore Airlines to Vietnam. He will be there for 6 months and coming back on the 17th December 2008 I think. He told me that if everything is good, he may get to come back 3 months later for a short period.

Reached the airport at 8am and saw my dad check in. After a while, his colleagues came along and we parted. My mom, brother, Huimin and I then went to Swensens for breakfast. The breakfast is good and value for money. Should have that more often.

Now whenever I am at home when it comes to 6.30pm (my dad used to come home at this time), it feels a little different, much quieter. The feeling is also weird as for 24 years, my dad is mostly with us. Even though I am a guy, I am proud to say, I miss you dad! I know he will be reading my blog at some LAN cafe in Hanoi, Vietnam.

PC Show 2008
Left the airport at 8.45am and the 3 of us excluding my mom dropped by Li Xiang office to pass her, her handphone as she left it at my house. After that we proceed on to Suntec City to wait for the PC Show 2008 to open as we are too lazy to come home and then leave the house again. We waited for about 2 hours as it opens at 12pm and we are there slightly before 10am.

Meet up with the guys at Frro, David and Michael too.

Before the door opens, you can see tons of people outside gathering. Once the door opened, everyone rushed in like they are going into a gold mine. As usual, you can see parents pushing prams which personally I HATE THE MOST. Seriously they think this is some sort of family outing but they didn’t realize that their selfish act always caused inconvenience for serious buyers and buys who bought big bulky object. Bringing kids is still quite understandable as sometimes no one is there to look after them at home, but for fuck you push prams along?

I seriously think that the organizer should do something about it, like set the minimum age limit to 12 or even charging a $2 entrance fee. A simple $2 entrance fee will not deter serious buyers. Hardware Zone Forums always suggest the organizer something about it.

I always try to boost the economy by helping others to buy when it comes to such exhibitions.

Helped my uncle wife to get a 250GB Western Digital Portal HDD (Passport Essentials) for $129.90, a 4-ports USB hub for $9.90.

Helped my mom to get Canon ink for her office Canon printer MX700 for $52.90.

Helped Li Xiang to get Sepom photo A4 paper, 5 packets for $28

My brother and I wanted to get the Razer Lycosa Keyboard. But as predicted by some fellow HWZers, there is no promotion to it and on top of that there are selling it more expensive. They are selling it for $129 whereas you can get at some places for just $119.

My mom bought for me a Samsung 2043BWX Monitor for $315 and asked me to give my old Sony 17 (SDM-HS73) to her to replace my brother old Philips 17″ CRT. At first I was asking her to buy a LCD monitor but end up she ask me to buy and give her the old one. Thank you mom!

The Box

2043BWX Monitor

The Monitor On My Study Table

David to himself a Samsung Monochrome Laser printer for $98 and an internal 3.5″ 320GB HDD (not sure about the price), whereas Michael did not get anything. lol.

We have just injected more than $733.7 into the Singapore Economy!

We ended our day at about 2.30pm and headed home. The usual impatient me, the moment I went home, fixed up my new monitor, swapped my old monitor with the old CRT monitor and everything works per normal. Luckily there is no dead or stuck pixel on my new monitor. Phew

Nokia @ Molly Malone
Left home at about 5.30pm and reached Molly Malone’s Irish Pub which is located at 56 Circular Road, Singapore 049411 for an informal Nokia meetup with Nokia Staffs (Angela, Annette, Cherie, Desmond, Luanne, Loretta and Wen Dee), Text100 people (Carolyn, Liyi and Supriya) and several bloggers (Mr Brown, Coleman, Sheylara, Preetam, Ben and his wife). Do forgive me if I miss out any names or the name typed is incorrect!

Cherie who is a product manager demonstrated many of the Nokia prototype phones like the N78, N96, 6220 Classic, 6210 Navigator, XpressMusic 5320 and there is one more XpressMusic phone which I can’t remember the model name, but I think that will be the first XpressMusic phone to run S60 OS, currently all XpressMusic phones are running on S40 OS.

Desmond who is also a product manager demonstrated to me the N96 and the N78 prototypes. All Nseries devices after N78 will have the NaviWheel feature, just imagine the click wheel scrolling of the iPod. There will be light emitting from the NaviWheel every now and then to show that the phone is “alive”, they called it the breathing light. It is much better than the old school blinking LED lights at the top of the phones.

I played with the N96 and I think it is quite sluggish as it is still a prototype. With all the NDAs flying around Nokia, they can’t say anything at all with regards to unannounced phones like the XpressMusic 5800 “Tube”, N79 and the N85.

There will be an upcoming event on Monday and Tuesday which I will be attending called the Nokia Connection 2008. I can’t seem to find a link to that. Nokia Connections is held every year and is a hands-on showcase of the latest Nokia devices and services including: Nokia Maps, Nokia Music Store, N-Gage and Share on Ovi.

I got a feeling they will officially announced the Nokia E71 and E66 there as definitely there will be new phones announced.

By the way, the food at Molly Malone is good especially the Fish and Chips which cost $16 and the portion is big. The spicy chicken balls and the button mushrooms are good too.

Samsung has been very kind to send me a Samsung VP-MX10 for review as well as a 4 GiB SDHC SanDisk memory card.

As this is my very first camcorder, this review may not be as in dept as I cannot compare it with any other camcorder besides the video feature of my digital camera.

Summary
Pros

Reasonably priced

Long battery life

34X optical zoom

Compact and light weight

Digital effects can be added

Cons

Average video quality

Poor LCD display in view finder

No still image capture

Introduction
The Samsung VP-MX10 is my very first camcorder. There is also another variation of MX10, called the MX10AU. The only difference is MX10AU has 4 GiB of built-in memory on top of the SDHC/MMC memory card slot. The MX10 is retailing for SGD$449 while the MX10AU is retailing for SGD$499, a difference of SGD$50. Even though I got the MX10, Samsung is kind enough to send me a 4 GiB SDHC card along with it.

Physical Appearance

Side View

AV Out Port, Mini USB Port, Charger Port

Battery Compartment, SD Memory Card Compartment

Holding Strap

The MX10 has a size of 60mm in width, 62.5mm in height and 121mm in length and weights 280 grams. The weight and the size of the MX10 feels quite good in my hands. Holding the MX10 on my right hand, I am able to use my thumb to power on the MX10, to start or stop a recording, to switch between recording and viewing mode, and to on the anti-shake (EIS) feature. My index finger is able to reach for the zooming in and out switch which is located on top. There is also an area to place my remaining of my three fingers.

Package Contents

Contents In The Box

Here are the stuffs that are included in the package

MX10 Camcorder

Main Battery

Button Backup Battery

Charger

USB Cable

TV Out Cable

Pouch

Camcorder Lens Cover Strap

Instruction Manual

Installation CD

Warranty Card

When I first played around with the camcorder, I notice that the backup battery in the compartment is missing and it lacks the lens cover strap. I wanted to write that as a con in this review, but just to make sure, I search through the box and found the battery and the strap packaged together with the manual. I think it would be good if they are separated.

Lens

Schneider Kreuznach Lens

Samsung is using Schneider Kreuznach lens for the MX10. I am not really good when it comes to lens and what the values actually mean and here is what it says “f=2.3-78.2mm” and “F:1.6″. The diameter of the lens is 30mm. It supports up to 34X Optical Zoom which personally I find it fantastic and up to 1200X for Digital Zoom. You can take a look at “34x_zoom.avi” for the demonstration of the fantastic optical zoom. You can find the sample video at the bottom of this post.

LCD View Finder

View Finder

The 2.7″ LCD View Finder is able to display up to 112K pixels. Personally I find that the quality of the LCD display is a little poor maybe they put it this way in order to accommodate the 120 minutes of recording time.

Recording

Settings Menu

View Finder

The MX10 records in MPEG4/ASP format. I have no problem playing back the video that I have recorded. If you have problem with playing back the video, you can try installing the software that came with the CD or by installing the famous Combined Community Codec Pack.

The MX10 can record in 3 different resolutions:

720x576i

720x576p

352x288p

and in 3 different qualities:

Super Fine

Fine

Normal

There are 6 scenes mode you can choose from

Auto

Sports

Portrait

Spotlight

Beach/Snow

High Speed

There are 6 presets for white balance

Auto

Daylight

Cloudy

Fluorescent

Tungsten

Custom

You can even add digital effect to the video from the 6 preset digital effects:

Black & White

Sepia

Negative

Art

Mosaic

Mirror

As the MX10 is reasonably priced, it is targeted towards the budget consumers and hence the MX10 did not include High Definition (HD) recording. If you like a HD version of the MX10, you can go for the HMX10C. The HMX10C comes with a 8 GiB of built-in flash memory and is retailing for SGD$1,199. There is also another model which is the HMX10 that does not come with a built-in memory but that is no longer available in Singapore.

Still Image
Sadly, the MX10 can only record video and could not capture still images. I think capturing still images is a good feature to have.

Quality
I am not very particularly impressed with the quality of the MX10 as I think the video feature of my digital camera can take almost same quality. The cons of using digital camera to take a video would be the lower optical zoom and lesser battery capacity because of the compact size of digital camera.

Most if not all of the video looks a little grainy when viewed from your computer as opposed to viewing using the MX10 View Finder. This is true as the quality of the LCD display of the view finder is a little poor.

The evening shot, “evening.avi” looks great whereas if you take the night shot, “night.avi”, some time is needed for the MX10 to focus of the target. As seen in the video, the quality goes from normal to blur, back to normal and then blur again.

I am quite impressed with the night shot ignoring the fact of the focus issue as I wasn’t expecting much from it. Perhaps because of the dark lighting at night, the video does not look grainy on my computer screen. I don’t think it is possible to record an object that moves very fast when at night as the focus issue will blur the entire video.

Sound
The sound quality of the MX10 is rather good, it can reproduce recorded sound clearly and loudly. No complaints from me for this part.

Size
The video that I have recorded are in 720x576i resolution with super fine quality which is the best the MX10 can record. Judging from that, a 45 seconds video is 26,475 KiB in file size. That would make 1 second of video 588 KiB in size. A 4 GiB SD-HC card can record up to 1 hour and 55 minutes of video in 720x576i resolution with super fine quality. Technically, it can support up to 32GiB SD-HC memory card.

Battery Life

As Mentioned, 120 Minutes Of Battery Life

The Battery

Battery life is a plus point to the MX10. It says here that it is able to go up to 120 minutes of recording on a single full charge. My LCD backlight is on and the LCD colour and LCD brightness both are set to 50% and I off the Beep sound. I am able to get about 124 minutes of video recording which is slightly more than the stated time. I think by lowing the LCD colour and brightness, you can get even more recording time.

Conclusion
If you are looking for a dedicated and reasonably priced camcorder, the MX10 is for you. But if you got a mid to high end compact digital camera, I would say stick to the digital camera as the video quality of both the MX10 and your digital camera would be the same.

Personally, I would save a bit more and go for the HMX10 because it can record in HD and it will be future proof for at least a few more years.

Sample Videos
I have uploaded 3 sample videos for your viewing pleasure. These videos are taken straight from the MX10 SD-HC memory card, renamed and then uploaded to the FTP. They have not been altered in any manner.
