Alienware M14X Review
Posted by Lester Chan at 08:48 in Review

Got a chance to played with the Alienware M14X and my very first impression when I carried it home is it was so heavy (2.9kg)! But hey, it is Alienware, they make good gaming laptops which is not meant to be light in the first place.

The base model starts at SGD$1,899 with the following specifications:

  • Processor: 2nd generation Intel Core i5-2430M 2.4GHz (3.0GHz with Turbo Boost, 3MB Cache)
  • OS: Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit (English)
  • Memory: 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM (2 x 2GB)
  • HDD: 500GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
  • Display: 14″ (35.6cm) WLED HD+ (900p) display (1600X900)
  • Graphics Card: 1.5GB DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M using NVIDIA Optimus technology (Stealth Black)
  • Optical drive: Slot Load 8X DVD+/-RW Drive with DVD+R double layer write capability
  • Wireless: Intel® Ultimate N WiFi Link 6205 a/g/n 2×2 MIMO Technology
  • Security Software: McAfee Security Center – 15 Months Version
  • Primary Battery: 8-cell Primary Battery
  • Warranty: SG 2-year Premier Service with 1-year CompleteCover

The review unit that I have has slightly better specifications but it seems that the processor is slightly outdated so you cannot get the exact same specification online.

The main difference is the processor (Intel Core i7-2630QM 2.0GHz), memory (8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM – 2 x 4GB), HDD (750GB 7200RPM Hard Drive) & Graphics Card (3.0GB DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M using NVIDIA Optimus technology).

Posted by Lester Chan at 13:07 in Event, Gadget

IT Show 2012 starts today, 8th March 2012 till Sunday, 11th March 2012 at Level 1, 2, 3, 4 & 6 at Suntec Singapore. Opening hours are from 12pm to 9pm.

As I gotten quite a few emails regarding IT Show 2012 promotions, thought I would just like to share it in this blog post. It will not be as comprehensive as websites like IT Fair (Singapore) or Hardware Zone: Tech Show Portal.

Going forward, I might do this for every IT fair in Singapore. There are 4 major IT Fair in Singapore every year. IT Show (March), PC Show (June), Comex (September), Sitex (November).

It has a battery capacity of 2,000 mAh and only weights 87g. According to my brother, it can charge Blackberry 9900 (not many portable battery chargers can do that).

There are 2 USB ports, one on each end of the Sony CP-ELS. On one end is the Micro USB Port which it used to charge itself and on the other end is the normal-sizezd USB Port which is used per normal to charge mobile devices.

Fabrix Case For Google Nexus
Posted by Lester Chan at 19:41 in Case, Dock & Bag

Ordered the Black Suite Fabrix Case for my Google Nexus from Fabrix Cases. It is a custom size since they do not have it readily available and hence I paid USD$26.90 for it and an additional USD$3 registered mail shipping within Singapore.

I was very impressed by how well it fits my naked iPhone 4S when I ordered the Fabrix Fifth October iPhone Case and hence I decided to get one as well for my Google Nexus.

Microsoft Windows 8 Consumer Preview
Posted by Lester Chan at 07:42 in Software

Microsoft Windows 8 Consumer Preview has been released!

Key Updates In This Consumer Preview

  • Broad range of product changes and improvements. Since the Developer Preview in September, designed to preview the programming platform, Windows 8 has progressed across every dimension. From completing the user experience for touch, keyboard and mouse to refining the development platform, the Consumer Preview improves performance, quality and reliability across all subsystems. With the added features, it represents a more complete view of the capabilities of Windows 8.
  • Windows Store with new apps. The Windows 8 Consumer Preview marks the beta opening of the Windows Store, which is filled with a variety of new Metro style apps from both third-party developers and Microsoft. During the Consumer Preview, these apps are available to try and experience at no cost to users. The Windows Store will offer personalized recommendations, and Windows 8 gives users the ability to take their apps and settings with them across multiple PCs, making it easy to discover and try new apps while offering developers the greatest opportunity of any platform.
  • Connecting to the cloud across Windows-based PCs and Windows Phone. The Windows 8 Consumer Preview offers seamless integration with the content people care about across their devices. An optional additional sign-on with a Microsoft account provides access to a host of features, including the ability to roam all settings, use cloud storage, communicate with email, calendar and contacts, and connect to a broad range of services. Your connection to the cloud works across your Windows-based PCs and your Windows Phones.
  • Internet Explorer 10 Platform Preview 5. The best way to experience the Web on Windows is with Internet Explorer 10. The browser has been re-imagined to create a new experience designed specifically for Windows 8 devices. It provides an edge-to-edge user interface that is all about less browser and more Web. Fast and fluid, Internet Explorer is hardware-accelerated to enable Web performance.
  • Preview of new hardware capabilities. At the event, Microsoft also showcased Windows 8 running on a wide range of new x86- and ARM-based reference hardware. This hardware will be available to select developers for trial and testing as previously announced.

Hardware Specifications

  • 1 GHz or faster processor
