Lester Chan’s WordPress Plugins June 2009 Update

Here is my June 2009 WordPress plugins update containing all my 16 WordPress plugins update. All of them should work on WordPress 2.8 as I did not test them on any WordPress version below that.

Now my plugins uses jQuery for AJAX instead of TW-Sack. I have also updated the widget code to make use of the new WordPress 2.8 new Widget class and that supports multi-instances widgets. The widget code has now been merge with the main plugin file so the standalone widget plugin file is no longer in use. Please delete the whole plugin folder and upload it again to avoid any error.

As WordPress 2.8 supports loading of JavaScript in the footer, all my plugins’ JavaScripts will be loaded in the footer. Be sure you have in your theme footer.php.

JavaScript In My Plugins II

I have completed the “update” process to my 5 of my plugins (WP-Polls, WP-PostRatings, WP-Email, WP-ServerInfo and WP-UserOnline) which use JavaScript.

WP-Polls and WP-PostRatings uses JavaScript on the frontend as well as the backend
WP-Email and WP-UserOnline uses JavaScript on the frontend only
WP-ServerInfo uses JavaScript on the backend only

Unfortunately the changes require at least WordPress 2.8 onwards to make use of the JavaScript enhancements in WordPress 2.8. I have updated this site to WordPress 2.8 Bleeding Edge aka WordPress 2.8 Nightly in order to test the JavaScript changes on a live site.

If you view the HTML source of this page, you will notice that only the CSS files get loaded in the header and the JavaScript gets loaded in the footer.

If you are running WordPress 2.8 bleeding edge, perhaps you can help me test out the plugins. Thanks in advanced

Here is my December 2008 WordPress plugins update containing all my 15 WordPress plugins update and 1 new WordPress plugin. All of them should work on WordPress 2.7 as I did not test them on any WordPress version below that.

I am introducing a new plugin called WP-CommentNavi which basically paginate your comments similar to how WP-PageNavi paginate your posts. I am also retiring WP-Sticky as WordPress 2.7 has a sticky post feature built in. WP-Sticky 2.31 WILL NOT work on WordPress 2.7 due to a conflict function “is_sticky”. If you renamed that function to “is_sticky2″ or something else, it should work, but as usual I did not test it.

*UPDATE* Due to the large number of requests, I decided not to retire WP-Sticky and I have updated it to 1.40 and it is now compatible with WordPress 2.7.

My Plugins And WordPress 2.7

I tested both 1.31/2.31 version as well as 1.40/2.40 version of my plugins and they appear to work fine in WordPress 2.7 EXCEPT for WP-Email and WP-Print. It is because for some reasons the canonical redirect happens before my template redirect and hence /email/ will always be an invalid page in WordPress eyes. This issue is not present in Wordpress 2.6.

My efforts had paid off when my plugins undergo major cosmetic changes back in WordPress 2.5 to accommodate the new WordPress 2.5 design. It is because for WordPress 2.7, I need not do anything and the design just fits right in. I just need to add in the icon for the admin menu for WP-DBManager, WP-DownloadManager, WP-Email, WP-Polls and WP-PostRatings.

Here are the fixes to get WP-Email 2.31 and WP-Print 2.31 to work with WordPress 2.7. I will not update WP-Email 2.31 and WP-Print 2.31 with this fix, instead I will just leave the fix to be downloadeded on this site. Do note that the fix will make WP-Email and WP-Print work for WordPress 2.7 ONLY.

Here is the fix for WP-Email 2.31:

In wp-email.php:

Find (Line 106, Line 120, Line 134 & Line 147):

1	$rewrite_rules = array_slice($rewrite_rules, 4, 1);

Replace:

1	$rewrite_rules = array_slice($rewrite_rules, 5, 1);

Find (Line 758):

1	add_action('template_redirect', 'wp_email');

Replace:

1	add_action('template_redirect', 'wp_email', 5);

In wp-print.php:

Find (Line 79 & Line 95):

After uploading the fix, you need to regenerate permalink. Go to (WP-Admin -> Settings -> Permalinks -> Save Changes)

I have already committed these changes to WP-Email 2.40 and WP-Print 2.40 to the SVN.

Tentatively WP-DBManager, WP-DownloadManager, WP-Email, WP-Polls and WP-PostRatings will work for Wordpress 2.7 only because of the new icon in the admin menu.

Here is my July 2008 WordPress plugins update containing all my 15 WordPress plugins. All of them should work on WordPress 2.5 as well as WordPress 2.6. It is not tested for any version below that.

In general, most of the updates are bug fixes. These updates in theory should be able to work till WordPress 2.7 when it comes out end of this year.

My new semester will begin on 2nd week August 2008, and hence I will be busy with my school work. So no updates to my plugins will be out till the end of this year unless it is a critical bug or a security issue.

Lester Chan’s WordPress Plugins June 2008 Update (Wave 1)

Here is the first wave of my June 2008 plugins update containing 11 plugins. The remaining 4 plugins (WP-Ban, WP-DBManager, WP-DownloadManager and WP-PostViews) shall be in wave 2. All of them should work only on WordPress 2.5. It is not tested for any version below that.

The most general noticeable change would be the path to the plugin is now fixed. Previously it was nested in another folder and I got several hate mails because of that. Since the path problem has been solved, the Automatic Plugin Upgrade should work in theory.

WP-Email And WP-Print With WordPress 2.5

For some reasons, the core permalink structure of WordPress 2.5 has been changed just before it is being released (the problem is not there with WordPress 2.5 RC1).

If you get a 404 on WP-Email and WP-Print posts/pages, you need to get the latest development version of the respective plugins. Refer to the post above this.

I also wished I have more time to spend updating my plugins, but as my school is nearing the semester end, all my projects deadline are also coming and so are the end of semester exams. I can’t fork out any valuable time to update all my plugins for WP 2.5 and hence, 1st June 2008 should be the day I will roll out the updates to my plugins as my last paper is on 6th May 2008.

But in the mean time, I will try my best to address all issues related with my plugins and WordPress 2.5.

GMnext’s Blog WordPress Plugins

As promised, I have release updates to 12 of my plugins and added 2 new plugins. All of them are compatible with WordPress 2.3 but not all of them are backward compatible with WordPress 2.1 or 2.2.

The 2 new plugins are WP-DownloadManager and WP-PluginsUsed. As the name of the plugins suggest, WP-DownloadManager simply enhanced your WordPress by adding a simple download manager to it. WP-PluginsUsed will displays both active and inactive plugins that you are using in your WordPress blog.

WP-Print And WP-EMail On WP 2.3

Someone reported to me that WP-Email is not working on this site, and after some checking, I also found out that WP-Print is also not working due to the extra / that WordPress generates for wp-print and wp-email permalink structure in WP 2.3.

WP-EMail has another problem which took me 4 hours just go pin-point it. Apparently when it includes wp-email.php and in wp-email.php there is a add_filter(‘the_title’) which hooks onto the title filter. For some reasons, the core WordPress function get_the_title() is casing the server to throw an error. In order to bypass it I have to create a new function to emulate something like the get_the_title() function.

I have since fixed all the bugs that I mentioned above and now WP-Print and WP-EMail will only work for WP2.3 and nothing below it. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

WP-Email 2.20 Beta 1

I have added AJAX feature to WP-Email 2.20 because it has been requested quite a number of times. Now when you recommend your friend a post/page, it will be sent using AJAX.

I have updated this site from WP-Email 2.11 to WP-Email 2.20 Beta 1 to give you a live demo of the AJAX. Just click on any “Email This Post” link.

I have fixed 2 minor bugs for WP-EMail 2.11 and WP-Print 2.11. I did not bump the version number because a lot of hassle is needed. Instead I just update the zip file.

The 2 bugs are:

1. Unable to display feed properly if you are using [ email_link ] or [ print_link ] to embed the email/print link within the post.
2. 404 error if you are using a custom permalink structure without a / at the end.

Note: If you get 404 error even after re-generating permalinks, it means that your theme is using an outdated way of getting/display posts from the database. Just drop me an email with your page.php from your theme folder attached.

There will be no more integrating of wp-email to your theme, everything is automatic now, you do not even need to create a page for this.

I have also internationalize this plugin which makes localization much easier.

Hi guys,

WP-EMail 2.10 is ready for testing, I need you guys to help me test this out because I have re-written part of the core code to support the ability to display the email form within pages. Yes, you do not need to manually edit wp-email.php anymore. It will be integrated into the page. An example of course would be this site.

I have added the styling of the email link similar to WP-Print. Check out the screenshot, readme/changelog and download link below.
