I have released WP-Polls 2.61 which fixes a code injection via “HTTP Referrer” and affects users who are on WP-Polls 2.60 only.

I also took this chance to port the readme.html to the proper readme.txt which WordPress.org is using and now you can see all the details of WP-Polls right from the plugins page itself regardless if it is from your WP-Admin or WordPress.org.

All users should upgrade now

I have release an update for both WP-Polls & WP-DBManager. There are no major changes just some bug fixes especially to get it working with WordPress 3.0 Multi-Site options. I will continue to roll that fix out to other plugins as well when I have more time. The reason I chose WP-Polls and WP-DBManager first because of the number of request to get it working with the MS option.

I have also point the latest working stable version to trunk because I will not be adding any new features but bug fixes along the way and hence I am the trunk will be stable.

Lester Chan’s WordPress Plugins June 2009 Update

Here is my June 2009 WordPress plugins update containing all my 16 WordPress plugins update. All of them should work on WordPress 2.8 as I did not test them on any WordPress version below that.

Now my plugins uses jQuery for AJAX instead of TW-Sack. I have also updated the widget code to make use of the new WordPress 2.8 new Widget class and that supports multi-instances widgets. The widget code has now been merge with the main plugin file so the standalone widget plugin file is no longer in use. Please delete the whole plugin folder and upload it again to avoid any error.

As WordPress 2.8 supports loading of JavaScript in the footer, all my plugins’ JavaScripts will be loaded in the footer. Be sure you have in your theme footer.php.

JavaScript In My Plugins II

I have completed the “update” process to my 5 of my plugins (WP-Polls, WP-PostRatings, WP-Email, WP-ServerInfo and WP-UserOnline) which use JavaScript.

WP-Polls and WP-PostRatings uses JavaScript on the frontend as well as the backend
WP-Email and WP-UserOnline uses JavaScript on the frontend only
WP-ServerInfo uses JavaScript on the backend only

Unfortunately the changes require at least WordPress 2.8 onwards to make use of the JavaScript enhancements in WordPress 2.8. I have updated this site to WordPress 2.8 Bleeding Edge aka WordPress 2.8 Nightly in order to test the JavaScript changes on a live site.

If you view the HTML source of this page, you will notice that only the CSS files get loaded in the header and the JavaScript gets loaded in the footer.

If you are running WordPress 2.8 bleeding edge, perhaps you can help me test out the plugins. Thanks in advanced

Here is my December 2008 WordPress plugins update containing all my 15 WordPress plugins update and 1 new WordPress plugin. All of them should work on WordPress 2.7 as I did not test them on any WordPress version below that.

I am introducing a new plugin called WP-CommentNavi which basically paginate your comments similar to how WP-PageNavi paginate your posts. I am also retiring WP-Sticky as WordPress 2.7 has a sticky post feature built in. WP-Sticky 2.31 WILL NOT work on WordPress 2.7 due to a conflict function “is_sticky”. If you renamed that function to “is_sticky2″ or something else, it should work, but as usual I did not test it.

*UPDATE* Due to the large number of requests, I decided not to retire WP-Sticky and I have updated it to 1.40 and it is now compatible with WordPress 2.7.

Lester Chan’s WordPress Plugins July 2008 Update

Here is my July 2008 WordPress plugins update containing all my 15 WordPress plugins. All of them should work on WordPress 2.5 as well as WordPress 2.6. It is not tested for any version below that.

In general, most of the updates are bug fixes. These updates in theory should be able to work till WordPress 2.7 when it comes out end of this year.

My new semester will begin on 2nd week August 2008, and hence I will be busy with my school work. So no updates to my plugins will be out till the end of this year unless it is a critical bug or a security issue.

Lester Chan’s WordPress Plugins June 2008 Update (Wave 1)

Here is the first wave of my June 2008 plugins update containing 11 plugins. The remaining 4 plugins (WP-Ban, WP-DBManager, WP-DownloadManager and WP-PostViews) shall be in wave 2. All of them should work only on WordPress 2.5. It is not tested for any version below that.

The most general noticeable change would be the path to the plugin is now fixed. Previously it was nested in another folder and I got several hate mails because of that. Since the path problem has been solved, the Automatic Plugin Upgrade should work in theory.

My Plugins And WordPress 2.5

The current version of all my plugins will work on WordPress 2.5 PROVIDED you have upgraded your WordPress blog from WP 2.x to WP 2.5.

If you are using a fresh copy of WordPress 2.5 together with my plugins, it WILL NOT work as WordPress 2.5 changes the Activation Global Scope Of The Plugins. In simpler terms, it means that upon activation of my plugins in WP-Admin, it will not create the tables needed by the respective plugins.

To solve this problem temporary, do the following in polls.php (I am using WP-Polls as an example):

Find:

$wpdb->pollsq = $table_prefix.'pollsq';
$wpdb->pollsa = $table_prefix.'pollsa';
$wpdb->pollsip = $table_prefix.'pollsip';

Replace:

global $wpdb;
$wpdb->pollsq = $wpdb->prefix.'pollsq';
$wpdb->pollsa = $wpdb->prefix.'pollsa';
$wpdb->pollsip = $wpdb->prefix.'pollsip';

Note the addition of the “global $wpdb;” and the replacement of “$table_prefix” with “$wpdb->prefix“.

I have updated WP-Polls, WP-ServerInfo, WP-Sticky and WP-UserOnline to work with WordPress 2.5. You can get them here at my downloads page (do note that they are still in beta). Those plugins that end with a “Beta 2″ means it will work for WordPress 2.5.

Some of the updates are:

Making sure that the styling, alignment and color of the plugin matches WordPress 2.5
Fixes the “Activation Global Scope” issue
Updated WP-Polls TinyMCE plugin to work with TinyMCE 3.0
Added a summary of WP-ServerInfo as a Dashboard Widget
Added a summary of WP-UserOnline in the Right Now Dashboard Widget

Packed Javascript For WP-Polls

As I have received many request to optimized the Javascript for WP-Polls (I will also do it for other plugins but I will beta test it with WP-Polls first), I have used Dean Edwards Packer to pack my Javascript for WP-Polls and then I have moved the Dynamic Javascript variables out of the Javascript file and into the PHP page and now I can renamed it back to .js extension instead of .php.

These 2 things that I have done should help reduce the load on the server.

Plugins Structure Changes

All my plugins will undergo a structure change to accommodate the Official WordPress Plugins Repository. This is also a much requested feature for most of my users as they complained that the zip file generated by WordPress Plugins Repository was 2 level deep and they got some issues when installing the plugin and the official plugin update notification will not work.

As posted in WordPress Ideas:

Some of us the older plugin authors are facing problem/hassle of restructuring the our plugin structure as our plugin name need not necessary follow the official plugin name folder naming convention.

And when user download the file from the repository, it will be the \\.php

As this is a major change, things will break, so I need you guys help to help me test it. The first plugin that rolls out this structure update will be WP-Polls.

The structure change for wp-polls involves:

Using /wp-polls/ folder instead of /polls/
Using wp-polls.php instead of polls.php
Using wp-polls-widget.php instead of polls-widget.php
Replacing all the old references with the new references stated above

As promised, I have release updates to 12 of my plugins and added 2 new plugins. All of them are compatible with WordPress 2.3 but not all of them are backward compatible with WordPress 2.1 or 2.2.

The 2 new plugins are WP-DownloadManager and WP-PluginsUsed. As the name of the plugins suggest, WP-DownloadManager simply enhanced your WordPress by adding a simple download manager to it. WP-PluginsUsed will displays both active and inactive plugins that you are using in your WordPress blog.

Updated This Site WP-Polls To 2.11 RC1

I have updated this site WP-Polls to 2.11 RC1 to test out the multiple answers voting feature in WP-Polls 2.20. You can set the maximum number of answers that the user can vote, in this case, I set it to 14 as there are 14 answers.

Note the poll footer that says “Total Voters” and NOT “Total Votes”. The individual answer on the other hand is “Votes” and not “Voters” and the percentage is calculated based on the “Total Voters”.

Vote away on the right hand sidebar.

WP-Polls 2.20 Logs

Someone mentioned in the forums that since WP-Polls 2.20 allows users to vote for multiple answers, it make sense to revamp the whole logging part of WP-Polls and to allow administrator better understand his site’s voters preference.

I have since done so but it is still in a planning stages, comments and ideas are all welcomed. Here is a screenshot to get my point across.

I have removed the poll’s log from the Edit Poll and move it to its own page called log. There will be paging in the log page for sure.

There are 3 main ways you can filter the logs.

1. You can choose to display all the users that voted for a certain answers in a poll and you can choose what type voters you want to display.

2. View the answer voted by registered users or comment authors. It will not support guests.

3. You can choose to display the users who voted for more than 2 answers and what they voted for. This option is only available if the poll supports multiple answers.

Registered Users – It means the user is registered with your WordPress blog.
Comment Authors – Visitors who posted comments in your blog before and hence we are able to get his name/nickname via the cookies. 2 comment authors may share the same name, so it is not 100% accurate.
Guests – Self explanatory

I hope I can released WP-Polls 2.20 in mid May 2007.

I have left 1 more task to do which I have no idea how to design it; To improve the Edit Poll page where it shows a list of IP addresses of the users who voted for the poll. Imagine you got 4000+ people who voted for the poll like the sample poll you see on the right sidebar. It will be a nightmare when it comes to editing the poll (due to the time taken to render the page).

WP-Polls 2.20 Beta 1 is out the door. As usual, please do not run it on a live site as it is still in a beta stage. There are A LOT of changes between WP-Polls 2.14 and WP-Polls 2.20. 2 major ones are the implementation of polls that allow users to choose multiple answers and AJAX used in the administration panel.

I will try to capture screenshots for all of my plugins when I have the time to do so in addition to the live demo mainly because the administration panel cannot be shown. WP-Polls is the first plugin to get screenshoted.

Total Voters And Total Votes

I have reviewed how Invision Board and vBulletin implemented their multiple answers poll and I have decided to use it on WP-Polls. As of now, there will be a new term called Total Voters. This term will contain the number of voters who voted for the poll.

If you are using a poll which allow single answer only, your Total Voters = Total Votes because 1 user can only choose 1 vote.

But if you have a poll which allows multiple answers to be selected, Total Voters will mean the total number of uses that voted for your poll and Total Votes will mean the total number of votes that has been casted on your poll.

For example, if a user selected 3 answers for the poll, the Total Voters will only be incremented by 1, but on the other hand, the Total Votes will be incremented by 3 because that user selected 3 answers.

If anyone of you need clearer explanation, just post it in the comments. Just give me 1 more week before I release WP-Polls 2.20 beta for testing.
