The D-Link DSP-W215 WiFi Smart Plug as the name suggests is a plug that is connected to your wireless network and that makes it “smart”.
It runs on 802.11n wireless network and is currently retailing for S$69.
Using the mydlink Home app (iOS | Android) on your mobile phone, you can use it to turn on and off the device that is connected to the plug. The smart plug also monitors the power usage of the device that is plugged in.
Unboxing

Setup
Setting up the smart plug is pretty straight forward, you just need to install the mydlink Home app for iOS or Android) on your mobile phone and follow the on screen instructions as shown in the screenshots below.

There is an option for manual Wi-Fi setup if you are not using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) like me.

Devices that are plugged into the plug are monitored for energy usage and there is a thermal sensor inside the plug that will automatically turn off overheating devices.

You can also schedule it to turn on or off at a fix timing.
I wish there is geofencing built into the app, so when I reached home, the device can be switched on automatically. Philips Hue does that pretty well for its’ lights.
Judging by the app is not yet iPhone 6/6 Plus optimized after almost a year, I think the chances of such new features are slim.

Looks pretty similar in functionality to the Belkin Wemo but the price looks a lot better!
Only bad side is that it doesn’t support IFTTT =(
Does it have that annoying start up delay which the Wemo has due to device discovery? I have the Wemo Insight which does quite a lot of the same things as this but far most expensive. And I don’t use IFTTT so its ok.
To be honest, I wish these devices could be made to send a WOL packet after they been toggled on. Would make a great tool to remotely power on machines.
I just bought the WeMo (Thursdays post) and the setting up experience is horrible! And I get what you mean by the delay. The D-Link seems much faster.
A WOL packet is good! I wish it has a IR as well so it can on the tv =p
Actually besides the WOL pack idea, they could also add a watchdog and/or power cycle feature. For example, if used to plug a router, if the device looses connection to the internet, it could cycle power. Likewise, if you initiate a power cycle, it should power back on. Right now, if you connect it to a router, it will switch off and you can never turn it on again.
Dual Wifi would be nice too!
I like this idea!
Actually I got the insight from Amazon UK. US version is 110V only
Yea! I see.
Great review!
Glad to know that my house wont catch fire anymore if I left my iron on.
If I had the money, I would definitely attach these to my lights, electric stoves and stuff. Might also be able to give the impression that we are home during vacations.
