Lester Chan’s WordPress Plugins October 2007 Update

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

As promised, I have release updates to 12 of my plugins and added 2 new plugins. All of them are compatible with WordPress 2.3 but not all of them are backward compatible with WordPress 2.1 or 2.2.

The 2 new plugins are WP-DownloadManager and WP-PluginsUsed. As the name of the plugins suggest, WP-DownloadManager simply enhanced your WordPress by adding a simple download manager to it. WP-PluginsUsed will displays both active and inactive plugins that you are using in your WordPress blog.

Be sure to read the readme.html and checkout the changelog for more information and most importantly NOTE THE TABS AT THE TOP

14th July 2007

Remote File

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

I have added a feature to WP-DownloadManager that will allow you to add a remote file to the downloads. This remote file will looks as if it resides on your own server and the process is totally transparent to the user. The only downside is at times it is unable to get the file size and hence it will display as unknown.

I have added WP-PostRatings 1.20 Beta 1 as an example of remote file. Remember that the file does not reside in this sever but it is pointing to a remote file url which is http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/wp-postratings.zip

WP-DownloadManager Updates

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

I have been spending the past few days coding WP-DownloadManager, and I am proud to say that I can release the beta very soon. I just left the readme.html to do.

For those who cannot wait for the readme, here is the direct link to the file via WordPress Plugins SVN.

As it is now, any file added to WP-DownloadManager can be download by anyone, I may add in permission to each file if I get enough responses.

Remember to update your permalinks by going to “WP-Admin -> Options -> Permalink” and click “Update Permalink Structure” because the file direct download link will be “http://yoursite.com/download/1/” where 1 is your file ID.

I think a picture paints a thousand words:

4th January 2007

WordPress 2.1

Thursday, January 4th, 2007

Thanks to a fellow member (Turk) in GaMerZ.Forums, I came to know that WordPress 2.1 is in the beta stages, beta 1 to be exact. Some of my plugins maybe broken with WordPress 2.1 like WP-PageNavi and WP-Stats, but I had already fixed them. If you need it to test it out, feel free to drop me an email.

If you find any of my plugins that are not compatible with WordPress 2.1, please let me know so that I do not need to test all my plugins against WordPress 2.1

Now I need some ideas, I have been thinking the name of my new downloads plugin, but just could not come out with any name nice. WP-Downloads and WP-Download-Manager is taken.

I have the following in mind:
WP-Download (without the s)
WP-FileDownloads
WP-DownloadManager

Any suggestions are welcomed =)

WP-Downloads

Sunday, October 1st, 2006

I wonder if anybody is interested in this plugin which I think I may name it WP-Downloads. I ported it over from my WP 1.5.2 Site (http://www.lesterchan.net/blogs/) and modify it a little to be WP 2.0 friendly. What it does is basically add a little Download Section in your WordPress site. It will just keep track of how many times a file is downloaded. It will be a single page Download Section with categories to separate the files. I am still considering whether or not to add a upload feature to it as PHP only supports maximum 2MB of upload. Right now you have to upload the file to a directory set in the option page. I have not coded the user side yet, but the admin side is more or less done.

Give me your comments on this.

A similar demo is on http://www.lesterchan.net/others/downloads.php.
