Apple One-Day Chinese New Year Sale
Posted by Lester Chan at 17:12 in Blog

Apple will be holding a one-day Chinese New Year Sale, This Friday, 14th January 2010.

If I am not mistaken, they held it once every year, instead of Black Friday in the US, we have a Red Chinese New Year in Singapore. I did not get anything from the 2010 sale. For the 2009 sale, I got the Belkin Auto Charger For iPod And iPhone.

Based on my recollection, don’t expect much. Mainly the discounts are for 3rd party accessories only. Looks like this time round they have discounts for Apple products as well!

Mac App Store
Posted by Lester Chan at 15:50 in Software

As you probably heard by now, the Mac App Store is live. It is bundled together with OS X 10.6.6 update. USD$4.99 is the new USD$0.99 in the Mac App Store. I have not gotten any paid app from there yet as I bought all the software directly from the software company itself and hence the Mac App Store is pretty useless for me in terms of paid app. I only wish you can transfer license for those Mac software that you have bought to the Mac App Store so that it will handle the updating for you. But right now that is not possible. The only way is you have to buy it again which is stupid. Lets see what happen to the Mac App Store eventually.

From Panic Blog (Makers of Coda & Transmit)

If you’re a current customer, there’s no way to convert a previous purchase into a Mac App Store purchase — that requires a re-buy. But remember, what you have now will continue to work just fine.

The Mac App Store may show software bought from us previously as “Installed”, even though they’re two different licenses. You will not get Mac App Store auto-updates unless you purchase from the Mac App Store. To re-enable the “Purchase” button in the Mac App Store, just drag the app to the trash and empty your trash. Your preferences/sites will not be affected.

Moved To Vodien
Posted by Lester Chan at 03:02 in Site

If you are seeing this blog post, it means the DNS has resolved correctly for you. I have moved the site from my dedicated server in Frro to a VPS in Vodien. I did it because I wanted to play with more Linux stuff. And if I did it on the dedicated server at Frro, it may screw some of the sites hosted there and may cause downtime for them which is a absolutely no-no.

In terms of control panel, previously I am using DirectAdmin and now on the VPS, I am using CPanel. As CPanel is much more popular than DirectAdmin, there are tons of resources and tutorials available out there. I followed this tutorial, Memcached and PHP with cPanel, and got memcached up and running within 15 minutes on the VPS!

CPanel allows the importing of a DirectAdmin account, however I did not make use of that. Rather, I use Rsync, to copy the files between servers and mysqldump to dump the database from one server to another. I created the subdomains manually using CPanel and with regards to email accounts, I started afresh as I do not use my domain email for any purpose.

Once the above is done, I logged in to namecheap and change the IP for both NS1 and NS2 to point to this server’s IP address. Give it about 24 hours for the change to propagate and bingo!

I make a noob mistake of not updating my CDN provider, NetDNA, with the new IP and because of that I have wasted a few hours trying to figure out why all my CDN content are returning a 403 Forbidden error!

That basically sums up the migration plan I did to move this site from Frro to Vodien.

Looking Back 2010
Posted by Lester Chan at 11:50 in Blog

In my last year blog post, Looking Back 2009, I stated that I wanted to find a job, which I did, as a Web Engineer at mig33 and I started officially on the 1st February 2010. I have been with mig33 for almost 1 year, how time flies!

Last year I spend New Year’s Eve watching Alvin & The Chipmunks 2 at VivoCity and this year I will be spending it inside the Cinema, watching The Tourist, starring Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie and Paul Bettany at Orchard Cineleisure.

For my 2011 resolution/wish, I would like to visit the US or any country with snow! I have not seen let alone touch snow in my 26 years of life before (Snow City is not counted as it is crap). I am so going to make this wish comes through. Tentatively planning to go to the US in December 2011.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my readers, visitors and supporters a very Happy New Year 2011! HUAT AH (hokkien word for prosperity)!
