Nice Weather
Posted By Lester Chan at 21:33 in Blog

Today’s weather is really nice. Raining is always the best time to eat Laksa or Steamboat and maybe sleep. Thus, went with my mom to eat the Depot Road Laksa.

Today is also the last day of our Internship, but tomorrow need to go to school for a talk on Job Hunting. Since I think it is quite useful, I am going for it.

Saw Hackers 2: Operational Takedown last night, it was quite a good and old movie based on a true story. It is about a story about a Japanese White Hacker vs an American Black Hacker. Of course they have to show that the black hacker got caught. Their computer skills are elite of the elite. I think with that type of skills, you can earn big bucks as a white hacker. If I am not wrong, true hacker don’t use exploits.

Pixe-Junkies Version 2.0 has finally launch. If you are wondering what it is. It is simply a design community. So go ahead and register.

Anyone got the first hacker movie?

*Update* I think it is a Chinese custom to give those guys that are going into the army soon a red packet which contains around $40. I got 2 from my relatives, hope can get more =p.

Linkin Park Coming To Singapore
Posted By Lester Chan at 14:08 in Blog

Linkin Park will be coming to Singapore on Tuesday, 22nd June 2004 at the Padang. I am 101% going to miss it unless I defer using my WSC, because on Tuesday, I will be in camp.

LINKIN PARK will be playing at the Padang on JUNE 22. The show will be all standing, with at least 20,000 tix available. Tix will be priced at $85-$150, will go on sale in the next 2 weeks.

[Source: Life!]

Sighz, but I don’t think I am going to defer, need to think of the future more than the current state. My future > Linkin Park.

Anyway, it is HuiJuan birthday yesterday and PeiZhen birthday.

Happy Belated 20th Birthday HuiJuan and Happy Belated 20th Birthday PeiZhen.

I Miss Depot Road Claypot Laksa.

*Update* There is no mass briefing on the 7th May 2004, the 10am stuff is just about a talk on Job Hunting for both ITP and FYP students. I am not too sure whether it is compulsory or not.

I found this lame phrase, “aku bu ke yi dong anymore”. Malay, Mandarin, Hokkien and English language is found in this sentence.

Removing Sasser Worm
Posted By Lester Chan at 22:42 in Virus

First, to make sure you computer don’t get restarted automatically, go to Run, then type ” shutdown -a” without the quotes. This will prevent it from restarting automatically.

Download the patch from Microsoft site. Here are the links: Windows XP or Windows 2000/2003.

Install the patch, then download Symantec’s Sasser Removal Tool.

The tool will:

1. Terminates the W32.Sasser viral processes.
2. Deletes the W32.Sasser files.
3. Deletes the registry values that the worm adds.

Restart your computer in safe mode, run FxSasser.exe. After that boot up normally and run the tool again to ensure that the virus is totally gone.

Note: I did not tried the above steps because I do not have an infected PC to try on. But based on logic and common sense, it should work.

Funny: Company Memo
Posted By Lester Chan at 15:31 in Blog

Saw this funny article on the last page of 8 days issue 709 (May 6 - May 13, 2004). I find it is quite good, so decided to type it out word for word and share it with you guys.

Company Memo
Welcome back to the office after Labour Day. Please be advised that there are new rules and regulations implemented to raise the efficiency of our Organization.

Attire:
It is advised that you come to work dressed according to your salary. If we see you wearing Prada sneakers and carrying a Gucci bag we assume you are doing well financially and therefore you do not need a raise. If you dress poorly,, you need to learn to manage your money better, so that you may buy nicer clothes and therefore you do not need a raise. If you dress in-between, you are right where you need to be and therefore you do not need a raise.

Personal Days:
Each employee will receive 104 personal days a year. They are called Saturday and Sunday.

Lunch Break:
Skinny people get 30 minutes for lunch as they need to eat more so that they can look healthy. Normal size people get 15 minutes for lunch to get a balanced meal to maintain their average figure. Fat people get five minutes for lunch, because that’s all the time needed to drink a Slim Fast and take a diet pill.

Sick Days:
We will no longer accept a doctor’s statement as proof of sickness. If you are able to go to the doctor, you are able to come to work.

Restroom Use:
Entirely too much time is being spent in the restroom. There is now a strict three-minute time limit in the stalls. At the end of three minutes, an alarm will sound, the toilet paper roll will retract, the stall door will open and a picture will be taken. After your second offence, your picture will be posted on the company bulletin board under the “Chronic Offenders” category.

Surgery:
As long as you are an employee here, you need all your organs. You should not consider removing anything. We hired you intact. To have something removed constitutes a breach of employment. Thank you for your loyalty to our company. We are here to provide a positive employment experience. Therefore, all questions, comments, concerns, complaints, frustrations, irritations, aggravations, insinuations, allegations, accusations, contemplation, consternation and input should be directed elsewhere.

Have a nice day.

The Punisher
Posted By Lester Chan at 23:23 in Blog

Saw The Punisher last night. It was quite a good movie, storyline and action was quite good. Definitely better than Daredevil. If you are a Marvel fan, it is a must watch movie. It will be out in Singapore somewhere 2nd week of June. Definitely it will be PWC (Passed With Cuts) means it will be censored because a few scenes containing violence and nudity. But it is a very minor part, so overall it is still ok.

Went out with Calvin and Victor today to Bugis and Suntec for a walk/talk/see girls. Bought a Dragonball Z VCD set containing 14 VCDs. Now I have the complete collection on Dragonball Z and GT. And yes, I am a Dragonball fan till now.

Saw Alvin and JieLin at CityLink, such a small world. And today happens to be Alvin birthday. Happy 20th Birthday Alvin.

Seems that quite a number of people got infected by the Sasser worm. Symptoms include can connect to the Internet but can’t go online and rebooting of the computer. If you got friends who got infected and can’t use the Internet, help them by downloading the removal tool and pass it to them in a CD or Floppy Disc. More detailed information here.

The is going to be a Red Moon tonight because of the Moon, the Sun and Earth are all in alignment. More details here.

To Summarize (taken from HWZ):

There will be a total Eclipse of the Moon on 5 May 2004 (early morning).

The beginning of the umbral phase is visible in Asia (except extreme northeast), Australia and New Zealand.

Details of eclipse are as follows:

Circumstances of the eclipse-Singapore local time
Moon enters penumbra* - 01 51 h
Moon enters umbra - 02 48 h
Moon enters totality - 03 52 h
Middle of eclipse - 04 30 h
Moon leaves totality - 05 08 h
Moon leaves umbra - 06 12 h
Moon leaves penumbra - 07 09 h

Magnitude of the eclipse: 1.309

*When the Moon enters the penumbra of the Earth, the brightness of the full Moon would not change much. It would be difficult for the naked eyes to notice the difference.

Due to the sun’s ray on the moon during the eclipse, you can see a red moon that night.

Nike Cap
Posted By Lester Chan at 22:18 in Blog

Went to shop for some stuffs yesterday with Jackey and LiXiang, all the way from Wheelock to Plaza Singapura. Bought a Nike Cap for $23, shall use that for army purposes. Wanted to buy a slippers/sandals, thought of getting Teva, but their biggest size is 10. Had dinner at Ajisen Ramen in Plaza Singapura before having a chill out session at Starbucks.

X-Box Live is also having a launch at Ngee Ang City. It seems the whole of Orchard Road is extremely crowded yesterday. Had a hard time walking around in shopping centers when always there is a person in front of you taking his/her own sweet time to walk.

Went to pray today before heading to Bugis for lunch. Tried out the cafe named Terra which is just opposite Esprit. The price is kinda cheap but the portion is small. Food tastes kinda average and the glass containing the water is extremely small. I can drink the whole glass in 1 1/2 gulp. Went to coffee bean and tea leaves for some snacks and coffee, and I realized the cakes there don’t really tastes that good.

My brother and I bought a Neckerman Sandals at Seiyu, cost around $23 because the whole of Seiyu is having a sale, almost all items are less 20%.

It seems to me that all M1 shops have their Nokia 6230 sold out. Right now, I kinda interested in Nokia 7610.

Right now, I am revamping Pixel-Junkies website together with Paranoia, check it out here. Designed by him, backend by me.

W32.Sasser.worm
Posted By Lester Chan at 03:20 in Virus

A few of my friends had already been infected by this virus. It is a very wide spread virus. The patch had already been released weeks ago. If you got infected, you deserved it. For god’s sake, be a responsible user and keep your Windows up to date.

How to Tell If Your Computer Is Infected
If your computer is infected with W32.Sasser.worm, you may see a dialog box with text that refers to LSASS.exe. Some customers whose computers have been infected may not notice the presence of the worm at all, while others who are not infected may experience problems because the worm is attempting to attack their computer. Typical symptoms may include systems rebooting every few minutes without user input.

For more information on this virus and how to remove/prevent it, visit this Microsoft site.

To have enough time to do so, you need to disable the shutdown of Windows by any application. Go to Run, type “shutdown -a” without the quotes.

50 First Dates
Posted By Lester Chan at 22:00 in Blog

Had our 9th weekly dinner at Novena Square. Actually we went there to see the Malaysia Tour Fair, and we do not know what to eat at there. Thought of going to other place for dinner when we saw Magic Wok at the top level. Thus, we settle for that. The food there is average and it is quite cheap, we ordered lots of dishes and each of us pay $9.50.

Had a chill out session at Spinelli till it closes. The girl who told us that there are closing have a serious attitude problem.

Watched 50 First Dates, and it is an excellent show. Good storyline, very humorous and touching. It is on par with Love Actually. It is really worth $6.50, if not $8.50. I feel kinda bad watching this on my computer. Great and uncensored movies deserved to be seen in the cinema. This is a romantic comedy and if were to see alone, feels kinda sad. Nowadays hard to find friends who is interested in almost all movies. Last time during secondary school, i got 3 friends who love movies alot, and after school the 4 of us used to watch almost every movie at Great World City. Now 1 of them in LA, 1 in Army and the other is too busy with school work. Sighz.

Had lunch today at M Hotel’s cafe with my mom and brother. My mom is a member of the hotel thus we get 33% discount off. If 2 person dining, my mom can get 50% off. It is very worth it. Saw Jack Neo in the cafe also together with his wife and 2 other people. They are just sitting at the table beside ours. I didn’t really notice it till my brother told me. Jack Neo looks young in person.

I didn’t realize Nanto at Liang Court has closed down and it is taken over by another Japanese Restaurant called Tampopo(I think). Feels kinda sad, been eating there for more than a decade and suddenly it just closed down.

Now need to find a descent Japanese Restaurant which serves good food and the price is reasonable besides Shima.

BTW, I just subscribed to the Singnet Anti-Spam service, and it rocks. My spam mails have been cut down to more than 75%. It cost $2.10 per month. I feel that Singnet should have more value added services, even free webmail such as Hotmail is doing it for FREE. But guess this is Singapore, everything is about money.

Meeting With ICT’s Director
Posted By Lester Chan at 23:22 in Blog

On Tuesday, met up with the backpacking crew (Jackey, Laily, LiXiang, Terry and SuQin) at Queensway Shopping center to collect their bags that they have ordered on Sunday. Had dinner at Alexandra Village and we ordered Fried Sambal KangKong, Beancurd and Sting Ray from the stall my family and I normally will patronize, not too sure of the name. We ordered another hot plate chicken from some stalls and it kinda suck. Hawker food is cheap, each of us pay paid $7.50 for a filling dinner. I wonder how long can this price last. Everything is going up in Singapore besides salary.

Today, went to school for a meeting with our SP’s ICT director, Mr Song. Was early, so went up to check on ZhiFan’s group National Library Board project. It is a virtual walk though of the new NLB building done in 3DS Max. It was fantastic. NLB damn smart, ask ITP students (cheap labour) to do such stuffs. 3 person doing this project, each paid $400 per month for a total of 4 months, it total up to $4800. I think this project will definitely cost more if it was to outsource to other companies. I think they should at least pay them $450 to $500.

It just slip off my mind that Serene and LiXiang was also coming for the meeting till I saw them. The director talked to us for almost 2 hours but it was not boring at all because it is quite interactive. I find what the director said is quite true and is very applicable to life. He seems to keep himself up to date, knows about William Hung, played Counter-Strike and Warcraft with his 3 daughters. This talk really changed my opinion on him.

Didn’t realize my name was on the plasma television in the ICT office at level 4.

Since it is a fated day, went out with LiXiang and Serene to Jurong Point. Called Jackey and Laily to join us later. Had dinner at Mos Burger and light snack at Long John Silvers. The grilled fish from LJS sucks. I would called it steam fish instead and the fish is not fresh at all.

So coincidental, saw my cousin, Clifford. I couldn’t recognize him because he was wearing specs and he had changed his hairstyle. The last time I saw him was during Chinese New Year.

I keep listening to these 3 songs: 40 Boyz - Shimmy Shake, Maroon 5 - This Love and Five For Fighting - Something About You (song from Swatch watch advertisement).
