Synology DiskStation Manager 7 (DSM 7) was released on 29th June 2021. Right now, the upgrading process is still manual. You have to go to Synology Download Center, input your Synology NAS model, and choose your current DSM version to upgrade from.

I upgraded both my DS920+ and DS1621+, and my current DSM version for both is DSM 6.2.4. After clicking download, it will prompt you to download a .pat file. The file size is about 340MB.

Before we start the installation of Ubuntu Server to Synology NAS, you will need to download the Ubuntu Server ISO image from Ubuntu.com. As of the time of writing, the version of Ubuntu Server stands at 20.10, and the file size is almost 1GB.

Once the download started, you can log in to your Synology NAS’s DiskStation Manager (DSM) to install the Virtual Machine Manager from Package Center.

Synology started out having its own brand of RAM for as long as I can remember. I covered them back in 2017. After that they went on to have its own brand of M.2 NVMe SSD (SNV3000), SATA SSD (SAT5200), and SATA HDD (HAT5300).

One of the reasons Synology introduces their own lineup of SSD and HDD is for compatibility. The SSD and HDD are optimized for use with their own Synology NAS with customized firmware. Also, when things go wrong, the users don’t need to contact different vendors. They can bring it all back to Synology.

I posted about Synology DDR4 RAM last June, and at that time, there were only five types of Synology DDR4 RAM available, out of which only there is only one ECC SO-DIMM which is the D4ECSO-2666-16G.

With the launch of the Synology 21 series, Synology added two more ECC SO-DIMM to their range of Synology DDR4 RAM. There are the D4ES01-4G and D4ES01-8G.

I decided to upgrade my slightly more than three years old 4-bay Synology DiskStation DS918+ to the 6-bay Synology DiskStation DS1621+.

Back in 2017, DS918+ was the flagship Synology 4-bay NAS and that was replaced with DS920+ in 2020. Also in 2020, the 5-bay DS1520+ got updated.

Synology DiskStation DS920+ is the highest end 4-bay NAS of the new Synology 2020 Plus series. Other models in the series include the DS420+ (4-bay), DS720+ (2-bay), and DS220+ (2-bay).

DS920+ has an Intel Celeron J4125 with 4GB of DDR4 ram. Intel J4125 is a 4-core 2.0 GHz (burstable to 2.7 GHz) processor.

Synology DDR4 RAM has been available in the market for a few years now and it is mainly targeted at businesses.

But with the release of the Synology DiskStation DS20 Plus series for consumers, you can finally get the DDR4 RAM to go along with your new shiny DS920+, DS720+, DS420+, or DS220+.

Synology DiskStation DS220j is an entry-level NAS from Synology targeting at users who wish to give Synology NAS a try or are new to the NAS world.

Ten years ago, I decided to switch to Synology DiskStation DS210j from D-Link DNS-323 and I have never looked back since.

The Synology Mesh Router MR2200ac was launched in Singapore this week at a recommended retail price of S$199.

You can get it from Storage Studio on Lazada at a slightly higher price of S$220. Stocks are a little constrained right now but expect more stocks to arrive in January 2019.
