3rd Anniversary
Posted By Lester Chan at 00:34 in Blog

Today, 24th October 2007 (1024) marks the 3rd year we have been together. We celebrated earlier this time instead of the actual date due to my school commitment (having night class later).

We had a buffer dinner at Carnivore @ CHIJMES last Friday. Wanted to have it at VivoCity instead, but it is fully booked as I booked it in the morning on the same day. And the guy recommend me to book before Tuesday if I want to have dinner on a weekends at Carnivore @ VivoCity. Their business is damn good and the prices are not that cheap either. This shows that Singaporeans are not that poor.

Before the dinner, we are figuring our what CHIJMES stands for, but still could not get it. After checking Wikipedia, it stats that CHIJ stands for Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus, but did not state that what does MES stands for.

As our dinner is at 6pm and we preferred the indoor seating, there is no other table dining besides us and the food just keep coming. Li Xiang only selected meat there there as she is a semi vegetarian, while I on the other hand ate everything, but I don’t really like the lamb there, after taking a bite, it kinda spoil my appetite because of the strong smell.

Nevertheless, we ate till quite full and spend about 2 hours there.

Happy 3rd Anniversary

Get and play music and games on the move

Espoo, Finland - Mobile entertainment just got more fun with the Nokia N81 and Nokia N81 8GB multimedia computers now available globally. Designed for the best in music and gaming, these devices come with dedicated music and game keys and are loaded with memory so you can store more and play more.

The 3D Multimedia Menu introduced in these devices is the first step to bringing a new user interface to the Nokia Nseries range. The new menu makes it easy to discover and enjoy your digital content and the Internet, and share your experiences with others.

“Accessing your portable music and games collection is not enough anymore,” said Jonas Geust, vice president, Multimedia, Nokia. “Today people want to be more in control of how and where they consume their digital entertainment. They want to discover new favorites and share them without being confined to one location - and it’s devices like the Nokia N81 that facilitate this.”

The Nokia N81 and Nokia N81 8GB also offer the discovery of millions of tracks through the Nokia Music Store*. And, with their integrated Nokia Music Players, creating playlists and managing music collections on the move is a breeze. For enhanced sound quality, compatible high-quality headphones or speakers can be used with the standard 3.5mm headphone connector.

A preview of the N-Gage games service is also available in the devices, including playable demos of EA SPORTS(TM) FIFA 07, Asphalt 3: Street Rules and Space Impact Light. After the launch of N-Gage later this year, the full N-Gage application will be available for download. Players can then try all N-Gage games for free and buy only the ones they want.

The estimated retail price of the Nokia N81 is 360 EUR before subsidies or taxes. The Nokia N81 8GB is expected to retail for 430 EUR before subsidies or taxes.

MinWin
Posted By Lester Chan at 19:07 in Software

Microsoft has created a stripped-down version of the Windows core, called MinWin, that will be at the heart of future Windows products, starting with Windows 7, the Windows client release due in 2010.

While the Windows team has been working for years on reducing the dependencies in Windows which have made the operating system increasingly bloated and difficult to maintain and upgrade, its only been recently that the team has been able to create a separate, usuable new core.

Going forward, MinWin will be at the heart of future versions of Windows Media Center, Windows Server, embedded Windows products and more.

Microsoft Distinguished Engineer Eric Traut described some of the work the Microsoft Core OS team has done to build the MinWin core during a recent talk he gave at the University of Illinois. The full video of Trauts talk is here. Blogger Long Zheng clipped out the piece of Trauts talk which highlighted how the MinWin core will work in Windows 7 and posted it to his site.

MinWin is internal-only and œwont be productized but it will be the basis for future products, Traut said. But œits proof there is a really nice little core inside Windows.

MinWin is 25 MB on disk; Vista is 4 GB, Traut said. (The slimmed-down Windows Server 2008 core is still 1.5 GB in size.) The MinWin kernel does not include a graphics subsystem in its current build, but does incorporate a œvery simple HTTP server, Traut said. The MinWin core is 100 files total, while all of Windows is 5,000 files in size.

Traut said he is running a team of 200 Windows engineers working on the core kernel and Windows virtual technologies.

Traut acknowledged tat the Windows kernel is between twelve and fifteen years old right now. He said that Microsoft is operating under the premise that œat some point, well have to replace it (the kernel), given that it œdoesnt have an unlimited life span.

Traut did not mention Singularity ” Microsoft Researchs built-from-scratch microkernel-based operating system ” during his talk.

Instead, Traut spent most of his time describing Microsofts thinking around virtualization, and how virtualization can be used to ease backwards compatibility and other problems Windows users incur. He did not speak specifically about how Microsoft plans to incorporate virtualization in Windows 7, but did stress that virtualization should not be viewed as a crutch, in terms of improving existing code. He said Microsoft considers application virtualization, like that it provides via SofGrid, presentation virtualization (Windows Terminal Services and œenhancements to core Windows functionality are all other ways that the company can improve users Windows experience.

Nokia Beta Labs
Posted By Lester Chan at 17:32 in Gadget, Software

I have no idea you guys realized that there is a site called Nokia Beta Labs where it houses several nice S60 applications created by Nokia themselves.

I did not know that this site existed till I visited Engadget or was it Just Another Mobile Phone Blog that was talking about this S60 application called Conversation and what it does is:

Conversation is a messaging application that allows you to follow your conversations, organized by individual contacts. In addition, the application procides and easy way for replying to messagees, and to continue the conversations.

I tried it and I find it rather interesting but the down side or rather a bug in that application makes it not recognizing some of my contacts if the person who sms me have a prefix of +65 (Singapore country code) and my contact for that person in my phonebook does not have +65 in front of it.

Other than that, it makes replies to that person much faster and you are able to keep track of previous conversation (that is you did not delete the previous inbox and sent messages).

The next application I am going to try will be Device Status.

Nokia Device Status is a self-diagnosis tool that allows you to collect detailed system information both from your PC and your S60 device. Your current device configuration and phone settings are presented in a detailed summary, which you can use to determine the exact cause, if you run into problems.

Street Fighter 4
Posted By Lester Chan at 02:47 in Gaming

What could be better than Capcom bringing back Bionic Commando? How about Street Fighter 4? Games Radar is reporting from the Capcom Gamer’s Day in London that the 4th game in the series has been officially confirmed. A stylized trailer of Ken and Ryu fighting was shown, but no actual gameplay footage, and while development has started the game is still more than a year away for whatever platform it ends up coming out on, Still, we can all rest easy that it is indeed on the way. Along with this amazing news, Capcom also announced Lost Planet for the PS3, a new Ace Attorney game for the DS featuring and new main character, and an all-new sci-fi action adventure game called Dark Void. It takes a special kind of company to wait 20 years from the release of the original game to finally get to number 4 in the series. I can’t wait for the year 2012, when we’ll be playing Super Street FIghter 4 Hyper Mega Hologram Remix. Yum.

Dragon Ball Movie
Posted By Lester Chan at 16:46 in Movie

James Wong is going to be writing and directing the upcoming Dragon Ball movie, which is set to go into production this November up in the great white North that is Canada. Wong has previously directed Final Destination 1 and 3, along with Jet Li’s The One. He’s also got writing credits for those films, along with more than a dozen episodes of The X-Files and Millenium.

[GOKU] 18 years old, Goku is considered uncool and unpopular at school, but he is in fact an extremely talented martial arts fighter who gets rigorous training from his grandfather, Gohan. After the death of his grandfather by the evil Lord Piccolo, Goku finds his destiny in his grandfathers dying request that he find Master Roshi and gather all seven Dragon Balls (of which he has one) in order to prevent Piccolo from succeeding in his desire to use the dragonballs to take over the world. Trained by Master Roshi, aided by Bulma and Yamcha, friends he meets along the way, Goku proves himself a formidable, almost undefeatable fighter. On many dangerous adventures to find the remaining Dragon Balls and thus save the world, Goku conquers physical and emotional challenges, ultimately saving the world but clearly impelled to spend his life searching for the Dragon Balls with his trusty companions.

[BULMA] 20s, female, pretty, with great intelligence behind her gleaming eyes, Bulma is a determined, competitive young woman whose father’s five star Dragon Ball was stolen by Lord Piccolo, and who believes that she can harness their unlimited energy and change the world like Edison or Einstein. Bulma, who has a DBE (a Dragon Ball locator device), teams up with Goku, and with him meets up with Master Roshi and Yamcha as they attempt to collect the missing Dragon Balls before Piccolo can destroy the world. A resourceful and courageous young woman who’s also a weapons expert, she overcomes many obstacles with her colleagues, only to find the seven Dragon Balls ultimately snatched from their grasp but it’s clear she’s going to continue searching for them with Goku and Yamcha.

[YAMCHA] 20s, the bad boy who has no trouble attracting women, he taunts Goku, Bulma and Master Yoshi, who are trapped in a sand cave, rather than helping them with his rope ladder. However, after overhearing Master Roshi’s tale of Piccolo once nearly destroyed the Earth and are preparing to do so again, Yamcha has a change of heart and not only helps the three in the desert, but becomes a valuable part of the team. An ingenious young man whose utililty truck is the Swiss Army Knife of trucks every tool and gear imaginable sprouts from its body Yamcha joins Goku, Bulma (with whom he becomes romantically involved) and Master Yoshi on their quest to find the seven Dragon Balls before Piccolo.

[MASTER ROSHI] This older man is a good friend of Goku’s grandfather, Gohan, and Goku comes to enlist his help after his grandfather is killed. Although he looks like a beggar, Roshi is one of the world’s most fearsome fighters. Master Roshi begins Goku’s rigorous training to prepare him for the adventure of finding and fighting for the seven Dragon Balls to save the world from Piccolo’s destructive plan. A wise, somewhat wry man who knows as much about human nature as he does about martial arts, Master Roshi is impressed with Goku’s fighting but reminds him of his failings as well. Ultimately, Master Roshi sacrifices his own life in order to destroy Piccolo.

[MAI] Late 20s, female, her features exotic, sexy but deadly, dressed in gleaming black, with weapons strapped all over her body, she’s a martial arts expert and Lord Piccolo’s chief enforcer. Crafty and quick thinking, Mai uses her ability to shapeshift near the climax of the movie and takes on the form of Chi Chi, a young martial arts expert who’s romantically involved with Goku and later saves Piccolo from Master Roshi’s curse; once she is revealed she ends up in the fight of her life.

[LORD PICCOLO] An ancient being who despite his humanoid appearance, is from an alien race determined to take over the world. Piccolo is the cursed ruler of a demonic race who nearly destroyed Earth 2000 years ago, and with the coming of the eclipse and the possession of all seven Dragon Balls, he’s prepared to free himself and do the job right this time. Crafty and smart, Piccolo has some disturbing news for Goku, namely that the boy is actually a Saiyan who’s destined to join Piccolo as his right hand in destroying and enslaving the planet.

[CHI CHI] Goku’s lifelong love interest, Chi Chi is an attractive, tom boy-ish young woman who has grown up with Goku. She has studied martial arts and has always suspected that Goku possesses talents that are unusual and extraordinary. After Goku embarks on his journey to redeem his grandfather’s death, Chi Chi meets up with Goku and his crew at a tournament of champions where their mutual attraction finally heats up during a training session.

[GOHAN] Goku’s kindly, wise grandfather, he looks like he’s in his 70s but moves like Jet Li. An accomplished martial artist who trains Goku on the bow staff, he loves his grandson and is happy to prepare a special feast for him on his 18th birthday, as well as a special gift: a 3 star Dragon Ball. Tragically, Gohan is struck down by the high ninjas of the Namek-Jins, and as he dies he sends his grandson out to do face his destiny and do battle against them.
